Hamawaki Onsen
浜脇温泉
Does Hamawaki Onsen allow tattoos? Yes!
Hamawaki and Kannawa are where Beppu’s bathing began, and the arch outside this bath is a monument to the grander building that stood here before 1991. It is the one municipal bath still filling tubs at one in the morning.
Hamawaki is city property and the city marks it tattoo-friendly in its own facility data. That mark and the city’s 2026 tattoo map are the whole of the rule; there is no seal system and no separate hour. The same building holds Yuto Pia Hamawaki upstairs, which the city marks the same way.
The bath
The water here is piped in from a source elsewhere in the district rather than drawn under the building, and it is a simple spring, run through the tubs and away. Work in October 2018 gave the room two of them, one hot and one warm, which is what makes the late closing usable: at midnight you can take the cooler tub instead of the scalding one.
The bath is the ground floor of a block it shares with the southern district community hall, a gym and the Hamawaki Mall shops, and the fourteen parking spaces belong to all of them together.
Open 06:30 to 01:00, closed 14:00 to 15:00 for cleaning and on the third Monday. Adults 200 yen, children 100, and the 1,800-yen ten-ticket book also covers Tano-yu, Nagaishi and Hamada. Soap and shampoo are sold at the counter; the dryer is 50 yen, and 50 again if you carry your own in.
What is good about it
- Open until one in the morning, and open again at 06:30.
- Two tubs since the 2018 work, one hot, one warm, which matters at midnight.
- Fourteen shared spaces, used by the community hall, the gym and the mall as well.
