Higashimachi Onsen
東町温泉
Does Higashimachi Onsen allow tattoos? Yes!
One minute from the platform at Higashi-Beppu, a local bath where the walls are painted with scenery and the fee is small change. The two rooms carry different murals, so regulars know which side they are on.
A district bath with no website of its own, so the city’s pages are the only published ones. Beppu City marks it タトゥー可 in the facility data it maintains, and its onsen site answers the same question in three letters. The bath is one room with one tub, so this is the shared bath, not a side entrance.
The bath
You pay at the bandai and go down a long flight of stairs to reach the water. The room below is the old arrangement, changing space and bathing room in one, with no partition between undressing and getting in. The ceiling is high, the washing area is wide, and the tub sitting in all that space is small. The water is a simple spring, and the local verdict is that it is soft and slow to let you get cold again.
The murals are the thing people come to look at, by the illustrator Izuru Aminaka: Takasakiyama on the men’s side, Mount Tsurumi on the women’s, with smaller drawings tucked into corners of the room to find.
Open 05:30 to 22:45, 200 yen, with no regular closing day, though the city notes that bathing can be called off when heavy rain and a spring tide arrive together. There is parking on site. On 1 January every year the bath is free.
What is good about it
- Murals by Izuru Aminaka, Takasakiyama on the men’s side and Mount Tsurumi on the women’s.
- Open 05:30 to 22:45, with no regular closing day through the year.
- Free on 1 January, and 200 yen every other day.

How we know
Confirmed from the city, which is the only publisher this bath has: the タトゥー可 attribute on the city tourism listing, dated 30 June 2026, and the enjoyONSEN facility page. Run by the neighborhood, not by the city

The operator’s own wording on that page. Nothing here needs showing at a desk. If anyone does ask, show them this. It is the operator’s own wording.
Best for: A 200-yen bath a minute from a JR platform, with murals on the wall
05:30–22:45, 200 yen, no regular closing day, though the city notes bathing can be suspended in heavy rain. Parking on site. The murals differ between the men’s and women’s rooms. An older city article giving the fee as 100 yen is out of date.
