Does Hotel Hanamaki allow tattoos? In a private bath

Hotel Hanamaki’s four private baths sit round small courtyard gardens modeled on the resort park outside, each with a Shigaraki pottery tub long enough to stretch out in, and a day visitor can book one as easily as a guest.

Four private hot spring baths opened in the hotel basement in December 2022, and they take 45-minute bookings from 6:30 to 23:00. The group sells them to day visitors as well as guests, so you can book one without staying. Hanamaki Onsen publishes no tattoo rule anywhere on its site, which makes the private baths the way in.

Where it is

Sendai is the door to all of these. Akiu is 43 minutes on one bus from the station, with no change. Nyuto is the Komachi, JR’s Shinkansen across to Akita, as far as Tazawako, then a bus of 47 minutes, about 2 h 20 in all. Naruko is twelve minutes on the Shinkansen to Furukawa and three quarters of an hour up the Rikuu East line. Zao is the Senzan line rapid over the mountains to Yamagata, then a bus of 37 minutes up to the ski village. Hanamaki is the Yamabiko to Kitakami, one stop on the local line and a bus, about 2 h 10. Higashiyama is the long one: the Shinkansen to Koriyama, the Ban-etsu West line over to Aizu-Wakamatsu and the loop bus, nearly four hours with the waits, and easier from Tokyo. Best for: Booking a private bath in Hanamaki Onsen with or without a room

Day visitors pay 3,300 yen for the private bath plus the day-bathing fee (1,200 yen weekdays, 1,500 yen weekends and holidays); guests pay a separate charge. Book through the Hanamaki Onsen reservation center or Jalan; booked customers take priority. There is a 20 cm step and a 50 cm tub edge. Towels are provided. The new garden open-air bath Hanamaki Manten-no-yu (November 2024) is open to guests of every group hotel and has no indoor bath or sauna. In the same basement, Hourai-yu is a plain local bathhouse entered from the road to Dai Onsen. Guests move between Hotel Hanamaki, Senshukaku and Koyokan by a connecting passage, the Rose Walk. Free buses to Shin-Hanamaki and Hanamaki stations. The group site was crawled in full (500 URLs) and mentions tattoos nowhere.
