Does Hotel Shinayoshi allow tattoos? In a private bath

Private bath only

Hotel Shinayoshi has a geyser in its front garden: the Gongen-no-yu spring, 98°C from 200 meters down. It feeds a tea bath in a jar, a jungle rock bath and two private tubs that look straight out to sea.

The hotel publishes no tattoo rule. It has two private view baths, Taiheiyo and Oshima, each a single tub facing the open sea, available from 3 to 11:30 p.m. Use those; the shared baths are unconfirmed for tattooed guests.

The bath

The two private baths are called Taiheiyo, the Pacific, and Oshima, after the island on the horizon. Each is one deep round tub on a deck with nothing between you and the ocean, and both are open from 3 to 11:30 p.m. The hotel praises the feel of the glazed tub against the skin and says the sea breeze is the only background music. The hot spring page does not give a fee or say how to book, so ask at the front desk when you arrive.

The shared baths are an assortment: a jungle rock bath among plants, a waterfall bath, a rejuvenation bath, and a tea bath in a big jar shaped like a rice bowl, where green tea is steeped into free-flowing spring water. They alternate between men and women, one group from 3 to 11:30 p.m. and the other from 5 to 9 a.m.

The spring, Gongen-no-yu, erupts in the garden in front of the entrance from 200 meters down. It is mildly alkaline at pH 8.4, and the hotel lists it for the skin, cold sensitivity and chronic digestive and women's complaints. A private bedrock bath that uses the spring's heat, with a footbath attached, runs 50 minutes from the top of each hour.

The hotel

A long-running hotel by the beach at Atagawa, which the local inn association describes as a place to enjoy the spring and the ocean view in a nostalgic mood. The hotel writes about its own baths with a good deal of humor, and it makes a feature of the spring that erupts in the garden by the front door. Besides the baths it has the private bedrock bath with a footbath. Free parking holds 30 cars.
