Izu Retreat Atagawa Suiko by Onko Chishin
伊豆リトリート 熱川粋光 by 温故知新
Does Izu Retreat Atagawa Suiko by Onko Chishin allow tattoos? In a private bath
Atagawa Suiko turned an old seaside hotel into 16 suites, and in two of them the former public bath itself is now a private open-air pool. Every room has a free-flowing spring tub facing the horizon.
There is no shared bath of any kind here. Each of the 16 rooms has its own open-air tub of free-flowing spring water, and the hotel’s FAQ says guests with tattoos may use the room baths freely. It asks only that tattoos stay out of other guests’ sight in the public areas.

The bath
The hotel has no large bath and no bath to reserve. Instead each of its 16 rooms has an open-air tub on the sea side, filled from the Atagawa source and left running, so you can bathe whenever you like and as often as you like. The water is a sodium chloride and sulfate spring. The hotel gives its temperature at the source as about 100°C and the flow as 200 liters a minute, and lists it for fatigue, cold sensitivity, nerve and muscle pain and chronic skin trouble.
The tubs differ by room. The two Former Grand Bath Suites, about 200 square meters each for up to six guests, are built around what used to be the hotel's public bath: a private open-air pool of 19 square meters holding more than ten tons of water, with a sauna facing Sagami Bay. The top-floor Corner Suite and the Lounge Suite pair a smaller open-air tub with a private sauna and a terrace for cooling off. The simpler rooms have the tub alone.
Room service will bring drinks and light food to the tub at no charge, which the hotel calls tea-serving at the bath.
The hotel
Opened on November 1, 2025 by the Onko Chishin group in a building from Atagawa's heyday, with 16 rooms in six types from about 87 to 200 square meters, all with a sea view. Dinner is Japanese, served only in the restaurant and only to staying guests. There is a lounge bar with a record collection from the town's peak years, a room of old board games, a spa and a shop. Drinks in the room refrigerator are included. Stays are for two or more guests, with no day use. Check-in is from 3 p.m. and check-out by 11 a.m.
Good to know
- No shared bath anywhere, so the room tub is the only bath and it is yours alone.
- Keep tattoos covered in the lobby and restaurant, which is the one thing the FAQ asks.
- Free drinks at the tub: room service brings them out to the open-air bath.
- Tell the hotel if you will arrive after 5 p.m.; there is no early check-in or late check-out.
Getting there
Take the Odoriko limited express from Tokyo to Izu-Atagawa Station, or the Shinkansen to Atami and change to the Ito and Izukyu lines; the hotel's pages give no train times. From the station the hotel says it is a 10-minute walk. It also runs a pickup to and from the station if you contact it ahead. Parking is free and is not reserved.
Izu-Atagawa STN · Izukyu Line (Odoriko limited express from Tokyo)
