Hanakaze no Yu, on the second floor of a tatami-floored inn a minute from Nippombashi: Shijonawate spring water indoors, a rock open-air bath under bamboo and firefly lights, and the hotel’s own claim that its staff forget they are in Minami.

Tattoos are allowed if up to two cover seals hide them completely. The chain's seals come in three sizes up to 11.8 cm × 17.2 cm (4.6 × 6.8 in), and stock is limited, so ask at the front desk when you check in.

The bath

Hanakaze no Yu plays Japanese background music: a half-open-air rock bath of heavy dark stones behind a bamboo fence, a long indoor tub beside a floor of orange and cream checkered tile, filled with spring water trucked in from the Mount Ikoma area, a pale wooden sauna and a cold plunge in dark hexagonal tiles. The women’s side is kitted out like the men’s, with a stepped dry sauna with a TV and a big, deep chilled plunge. Open 3 p.m. to 10 a.m., the sauna off 1 to 5 a.m. Free extras: a welcome drink until 9 p.m., ice cream in the second-floor rest area until 1 a.m., a probiotic drink from 5 a.m., and late-evening ramen in the first-floor dining room.

The hotel

The whole inn is floored in tatami, and you take your shoes off at the entrance. Rooms are twins from an 18 m² compact to a 30.5 m² deluxe that adds a futon to its two beds, plus a 22.4 m² queen, all on Serta beds. Breakfast runs 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. for ¥2,500, with kushikatsu among the dishes.
