Does Lake Toya Tsuruga Resort Hikari no Uta allow tattoos? In a private bath

Private bath only

Fifteen meters of lit staircase climb out of the grounds to a viewing deck called the Ko-no-michi, and the rooms below it come with an onsen tub of their own on the balcony.

The shared baths are closed to tattooed guests, and the hotel says so in its own FAQ without leaving an opening: no seal is offered, there is no reservable family bath, and the refusal is extended in the same breath to religious tattoos. What is open is eight room types with a private onsen open-air bath, out of twelve types and forty-eight rooms in the house. Book one of those and the refusal never touches you.

Sapporo to Noboribetsu Onsen is about 1 h 45: the Suzuran, JR’s limited express (a faster train with fewer stops and a fee on top of the fare), then a Donan bus of 21 minutes up to the onsen terminal. Toyako Onsen is the Hokuto, the limited express to Hakodate, as far as Toya, then a Donan bus of 24 minutes around the lake, about 2 h 20 in all. Niseko is about 3 h 25 by way of Otaru and Kutchan, or a direct highway coach for less money. Jozankei has no railway: the Jotetsu Kappa Liner runs there from Sapporo Station in 56 minutes and is booked in advance. What happens when you arrive

Skip the shared baths and reserve the private one the way this page describes. Once the door is closed, the bath is yours.

How we know

Confirmed from official site (the hotel’s own FAQ, under タトゥー・刺青を入れてますが大浴場に入れますか?, plus its 客室 page for the in-room baths)

Read on: hikarino-uta.com/faq/

Best for: A private onsen tub on the Sobetsu hillside, in a house that has written down exactly where the line is

Rooms with a private onsen open-air bath: three suite grades, two Japanese-Western rooms in the east and west wings, two designer twins, and a family room. The same FAQ answers 貸切風呂、家族風呂について教えてください with 貸切風呂はございません, so the in-room bath is the only private option. Shared baths run 13:00–1:00 and 5:00–9:30 and do not swap between men and women. Opened 2022 in Sobetsu, and the newest large hotel on this shore.
