Does Toyako Manseikaku Hotel Lakeside Terrace allow tattoos? In a private bath
Toyako Manseikaku refuses tattoos in its large baths, so book a lake-view room with its own hot-spring bath. The saunoa room adds a private sauna and a terrace cold bath of lake water.
The refusal also names stick-on tattoos and body paint, and it’s printed on the hotel’s bath, sauna, day-bathing and FAQ pages.
The bath
Three kinds of lake-view room in the West wing have a hot-spring view bath of their own. The Japanese-Western rooms come in two sizes, 78 square meters for two or 116 square meters for up to six, with a 7-square-meter terrace and a ceramic tub. The Western rooms are 73 or 87 square meters, for up to four, and the larger has a 5-square-meter terrace. The saunoa room is a 90-square-meter Western room for up to four. Its private sauna, with self-loyly up to 90°C (194°F), looks out over the lake to Mount Yotei. Its 12-square-meter terrace has a cold bath of unchilled lake water at about 11°C (52°F) and two reclining chairs.
Susukian is a two-story villa for up to six in Sobetsu Onsen, let as a whole. It has a hot-spring bathroom with two washing stations, three bedrooms, a sunroom and a full kitchen, across 115 square meters downstairs and 102 upstairs.
The large baths, Hoshi-no-yu on the West wing’s 8th floor and Tsuki-no-yu in the basement, swap between men and women by date. They’re closed to tattooed guests, and so are the saunas and the Pool & Fitness lake sauna.
The hotel
The lake-view rooms with baths share a kitchen and laundry corner and a smoking corner, open around the clock. Guests on the robatayaki dinner plan eat in a lakeside restaurant kept for them. Check-in is 3 p.m. and checkout 10 a.m., and parking is free. At Susukian, collect the keys at the hotel’s front desk. It has no meals, so bring your own food; it has parking for four cars and Wi-Fi, and payment is by card only.
Good to know
- Fireworks every night in season. From April 28 to October 31, fireworks go up over the lake at 8:45 p.m. for 20 minutes, and you can watch from the lake-side rooms.
- Barbecue at Susukian, April 28 to October 31, 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Charcoal and a grill are provided; bring your own food.
- No pets, at the hotel or at Susukian.

Toyako Onsen terminal · Donan Bus
About 5 minutes on foot.
From New Chitose Airport, take a JR train to Minami-Chitose, about 5 minutes. Change to the Hokuto limited express to Toya, about 1 hour 10 minutes. From Toya Station, take the Donan Bus to the Toyako Onsen bus terminal, about 20 minutes. From Sapporo, the hotel’s paid Express Toya bus for staying guests leaves the group bus area at the north exit of Sapporo Station at 1:15 p.m. and arrives at 3:45 p.m.; it leaves the hotel at 10 a.m. It costs ¥1,100 one way or ¥2,200 round trip, for groups of nine or fewer, and must be booked with the hotel’s bus form.
