Yumura, above the Arayu source Ryokan

Asanoya

湯村温泉 朝野家

Does Asanoya allow tattoos? In a private bath

Private bath only

Sixty-eight rooms on the hill above the boiling source, every one of them with the spring on tap — at the basin as well as the bath — and six kinds of room with an open-air bath of their own, in a house that runs tea, flower and incense classes for its guests.

Every room has the hot spring in it — the ryokan’s wording is that even the taps at the basin run on it — and six room types have an open-air bath of their own besides. The large bath and the open-air one carry no published rule, so the room is the answer.

What happens when you arrive

Skip the shared baths and reserve the private one the way this page describes; once the door is closed nobody is checking anything.
