Does Hotel Taisetsu Onsen & Canyon Resort allow tattoos? In a private bath
Three large baths on three different floors of three different wings, one of them hanging over the Ishikari canyon, and a handful of Wabo Sekka rooms with their own open-air tub facing the same gorge. The hotel also states, on the page that lists all of it, that tattooed bathers are asked not to use the baths.
This hotel refuses. Its bath page says that guests with tattoos are asked to refrain from bathing, and that sentence sits on the page that covers all three of its large baths, so read it as covering the rented canyon bath too. The way in is the room: the Wabo Sekka rooms each have their own open-air view bath on the canyon side, and nobody else uses it. The hotel does not say on that page whether the room bath is spring water or ordinary heated water, so ask when you book if it matters to you.

Best for: A tattooed traveler who wants the canyon view and is willing to pay for a room that owns its own bath
The three large baths are Tenka-no-yu, a canyon open-air bath on the third floor of the Taisetsu Sanso annex (5:00–12:30 and 15:00–24:00); Taisetsu-no-yu, a seventh-floor view bath in the west wing (12:30 to 10:00 the next morning); and Chinita-no-yu, a European-style bath on the first floor of the east wing (10:00 to 8:00 the next morning). Tenka-no-yu can also be rented privately, four parties a day, 50-minute slots at 15:00 and 16:00, 5,000 yen per use on top of the bathing fee, booked by the day before and not sold over Golden Week, Obon or New Year. Given the refusal on the same page, do not assume that rental is open to you. Wabo Sekka is the room type with the bath; the separate Yukihotaru rooms have shower booths or unit bathrooms only.
