Does La Vista Daisetsuzan allow tattoos? In a private bath
Three private baths named for a fox family, a father, a mother and a child, each built differently, all free and none of them bookable: you check the tag on the door and walk in. The hotel is also the only house at Asahidake that says in writing what a tattooed guest should do.
The hotel refuses tattoos in the large bath and says so in its own FAQ, then answers the question in the same breath: it tells tattooed guests to use the free private baths instead. There are three of them, called Shumari-no-yu after the red fox, and they take no reservation. You check the tag and the key at the door and walk in if one is empty, as often as you like, from 14:00 until 11:00 the next morning. There is no washing area inside, so rinse in the large bath area first or in your room.

The three private baths are Kukoro-no-yu, a rock bath; Kumichi-no-yu, a red-brown brick tub; and Kupo-no-yu, which pairs a ceramic tub with an open-air cypress one. All three are free and unreserved: 貸切風呂はご予約制ではございません。空きがあれば、ご自由にご利用いただけます. The large bath, Momuni-no-yu, runs 14:00 to 11:00 with the sauna shut 24:00–5:00. Source is Asahidake Onsen (spring name Taki-no-yu), free-flowing, a calcium-magnesium-sodium sulfate and chloride spring, colorless and odorless, pH 6.5 at about 40°C. The hotel does not take day bathers. Most rooms have shower stalls only; a few have unit baths.
