Does Noboribetsu Manseikaku allow tattoos? In a private bath
Manseikaku refuses tattoos in its large baths, so book the private onsen and sauna on the top floor, or a room with its own hot-spring bath. The private bath takes three groups a day, 90 minutes each, and must be reserved.
The refusal also names stick-on tattoos and body paint, and it’s printed on the hotel’s bath, sauna, day-bathing and FAQ pages and on its English site.
The bath
The private onsen and sauna opened in November 2024 on the top floor, the 11th. It has a bath of free-flowing hot-spring water, a self-loyly sauna you can set up to 90°C (194°F), an unchilled cold bath at 12–15°C (54–59°F) and reclining chairs. It takes up to six people, three groups a day, between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m., last entry 7:30 p.m. A 90-minute slot costs ¥3,300 per adult (junior high school and up) and ¥1,650 per child aged 3 to elementary school. Day visitors can book it too, but staying guests come first.
The same floor, called Level M, has three room types with a bath of their own on free-flowing spring water. Suite 1941 is a 124.5-square-meter Japanese-Western room for up to six, with a 9-square-meter open-air bath. Suite 1967 is a 116.5-square-meter Western room for up to three, with an 11-square-meter open-air bath, its own sauna with a view, a cold bath and a terrace. The four Executive rooms are 71.5-square-meter Japanese-Western rooms for up to six, with a hot-spring view bath. Every other room’s bath is heated tap water.
The spring is milky and smells of sulfur. It runs through without recirculating, and water is added as the source temperature changes. The large baths, Tsuki-no-yu and Hoshi-no-yu, have a self-loyly sauna and two cold baths, open 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. and 4 a.m. to 10 a.m. They’re closed to tattooed guests.
The hotel
Level M has 16 rooms, a guest lounge with free drinks around the clock, its own check-in counter, a laundry room and a smoking area. Level M guests eat an irori-style Japanese dinner and breakfast at Shirakaba, on the second floor; other guests eat at the third-floor buffet. Check-in is 3 p.m. and checkout 10 a.m. There’s no in-room dining, and parking is outdoors, with an attendant at the entrance.
Good to know
- No pets. The hotel has no pet rooms and can’t look after animals for you.
- Traveling with small children? Shampoo hats, bedwetting sheets and bottle sterilizers can be borrowed at the front desk.
Getting there
Noboribetsu Onsen terminal · Donan Bus
About 1 minute on foot.
From New Chitose Airport, take the Donan Bus direct to the Noboribetsu Onsen bus terminal, about 1 hour 10 minutes. By rail, take the JR Rapid Airport to Minami-Chitose and change to the Hokuto or Suzuran limited express for Noboribetsu, about 45 minutes. From Noboribetsu Station, the Donan Bus runs up to the terminal in about 20 minutes. From Sapporo, the paid Yuto Liner Noboribetsu-go leaves outside Kamori Building 3 at Kita 4-jo Nishi 4-chome at 1:30 p.m. and reaches the hotel door at 3:30 p.m.; it leaves the hotel at 9:30 a.m. It costs ¥1,000 one way or ¥2,000 round trip. Book it with the Yuto Liner operation center by 6 p.m. three days before your stay; the hotel can’t book it, and day visitors can’t ride.

What happens when you arrive
Book the private onsen and sauna at the first-floor front desk at least 1 hour ahead, or by phone before your stay. In a Level M bath room, use the tub in your room. Skip the large baths.
