Does Mitsui Garden Hotel Toyosu Premier allow tattoos? Yes!
Tattoos are welcome in the 36th-floor baths, indoor and open-air, with nothing to cover. No seal and no size limit.
The hotel's own bath page says it has dropped its limits on body art and tattoos, with no condition on size or placement.
The bath
You come out of the elevator on the 36th floor, 165 meters up, and the room is almost entirely dark. The wall behind the bath is rough black stone shot through with white veins. The bath is lined in small green-black mosaic tiles that make the water look nearly black. Beyond it the floor turns to warm timber decking with pale dappled light thrown across it. Two smooth pebble-shaped seats sit out on the deck, one black and one white, for sitting in the air between soaks.
The whole of one side is glass. Past a thin metal railing there is nothing until the bay: flat dark water, and a low far band of city lights on the horizon. On the outdoor side you get the sea wind with it. Inside, the lighting is kept low and the hotel plays music written for the room. The design refers to the shipyard that stood on this land, which shows in the materials rather than in anything hung on a wall.
The bath is open 3 p.m. to 1 a.m. and again 6 a.m. to 9 a.m., free to anyone staying.
Open-air baths are ordinary in Japan. Open-air baths 36 stories above Tokyo Bay are not, and that's the case for this one over the rest of the group.
The hotel
The group's tower hotel, self-rated five-star, standing directly over Toyosu subway station with the shops and restaurants of the Toyosu complex at the door. Rooms take up to three. The corner Executive rooms have a bath set against the window, 39 m² with a king bed or 44.4 m² as a twin, and the three-bed Superior is 30.3 m². Check-in is 3 p.m. and checkout is 11 a.m.
The bath is on the 36th floor, and the restaurant is up there with it. THE PENTHOUSE cooks Italian in an open kitchen with Tokyo Bay in the windows, and breakfast is built around produce from Toyosu Market, with the same view the bath has. The gym is next door to the hotel rather than inside it, and the in-room amenities are a collaboration with the beauty brand ReFa.
Good to know
- Come up in your nightwear. The room’s nightwear and slippers are fine in the bath. Shampoo, conditioner, body soap and dryers are laid out. Towels aren’t.
- THE PENTHOUSE opens its terrace on weekends, 36 floors up, on the same level as the water.
- Toyosu Manyo Club is walkable if a second bath appeals, but it admits tattoos only under a cover seal of up to 11 cm × 20 cm (4.3 × 7.9 in).
Getting there
The hotel is connected directly to Toyosu Station on the Tokyo Metro Yurakucho line, out of Exit 2. Ginza is about ten minutes.

Ginza-itchome is about 15 minutes, Tokyo Station about 20. Haneda is roughly 20 minutes by limousine bus, Narita about 70.
