The bath

The bath takes the top floor, the 16th, and the two sides are so different they're almost separate places.

The men's bath is a long, narrow channel of water running the full length of a floor-to-ceiling window. At night the city sits below the glass: Shinjuku and Roppongi, blue-gray silhouettes with scattered red aircraft lights, fading toward the horizon. The room behind is kept dark, with rough gray stone, a slatted ceiling, and a single strip of warm light under the bath's stone rim. The water is still enough to hold the reflection.

The women's bath is the opposite. Pale cream stone, a bath tiled in soft blue-green, bamboo and ferns along one edge, and daylight from above. It's built to feel like bathing in a garden rather than over a city.

It opens at 5 a.m., earlier than anywhere else in the group, which is the practical reason to pick this hotel if you have something to catch. Full hours are 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 1 a.m., free to guests, with towels carried up from your room. There's no sauna on either side.

The hotel

Gotanda itself is offices and a railway viaduct with izakaya (a Japanese pub) underneath, not a place you travel to see.

Self-rated four-star. Rooms take up to three: a 36.8 m² Deluxe twin, a 24 m² Superior with one wide king bed, and a 24 m² three-bed Standard. Check-in is 3 p.m. and checkout is 11 a.m. The restaurant, Tanto Tanto The Gardens on the ground floor, does kiln-baked pizza and a breakfast with omelets made to order and bread from a local bakery.

Good to know

Getting there

The hotel is at Higashi-Gotanda 2-2-6, a short walk from Gotanda Station, which is served by the JR Yamanote line, the Toei Asakusa line out of Exit A3, and the Tokyu Ikegami line.

3 minutes from the East Exit, or the A3 exit on the Asakusa line.

Three separate operators at one station is the real argument for staying here: you are on the loop, with two other ways off it.
