Mitsui Garden Hotel Jingugaien Tokyo Premier

三井ガーデンホテル神宮外苑の杜プレミア

Does Mitsui Garden Hotel Jingugaien Tokyo Premier allow tattoos? Yes!

Nothing to cover

Tattoos are welcome in the 2nd-floor bath, built from the stone and tile of the pool that stood here, with nothing to cover. No seal and no size limit.

The hotel's own bath page says it has dropped its limits on body art and tattoos, with no condition on size or placement.

The bath

The subject of this bath is the building that stood here before it. The site was a swimming pool, and the room on the 2nd floor is built around an installation made from the stone and tile that came out of it. The material is the artwork, not something hung on a wall.

There's no sauna and no open-air side, and the water is not a hot spring. Among the group's Tokyo baths only Kashiwanoha draws from a source. The rest, this one included, are heated ordinary water. What you're here for is a proper deep communal bath at the end of a day on your feet, which the unit bath in a room can't give you.

Open 3 p.m. to 1 a.m. and again 6 a.m. to 9 a.m., free to anyone staying. Shampoo, conditioner, body soap, cotton swabs and dryers are laid out. Towels you carry up from your room.

The hotel

Self-rated five-star, and built next to the National Stadium in the greenery of Jingu Gaien. The design mixes wood and stone, and the thing that sets it apart from the rest of the group is the balconies. The 50.9 m² Junior Suite, the 46.5 m² king Junior Suite and the 30 m² corner Superior all have one, looking over the city or the gardens. The corner room adds a small kitchen. Check-in is 3 p.m. and checkout is 11 a.m.

The ground floor is where the hotel puts its effort. RISTORANTE & BAR E'VOLTA serves modern Italian with a Japanese accent, with terrace tables facing the gardens. Its breakfast buffet, which the hotel calls "glamping," runs to wood-fired meats and eggs Benedict. THE GROVE BAKERY next to it bakes with its own natural yeast each morning and sells to the neighborhood as well as to guests. There's a fitness studio and a guest lounge upstairs.

Good to know

Getting there

Three stations serve it, and one is a minute from the door. Kokuritsu-Kyogijo on the Toei Oedo line runs to Shinjuku in about four minutes. That's the practical reason to choose this one: the quiet side of the stadium district, with the west of the city a few stops away.

Sendagaya and Shinanomachi on the JR Chuo-Sobu line are five and six minutes. Shinjuku is about four minutes either way; Haneda around thirty, Narita about an hour and twenty.
