Tattoo friendly onsen in Naruko

Five hot spring districts share one valley here, with most of Japan’s spring types between them and a town that has carved kokeshi dolls for two hundred years. What it does not have is answers: three operators in the whole valley write anything down about tattoos. So this page is the baths nobody shares, and the one municipal bathhouse that rents you an open-air bath of your own by the fifty minutes.

Masuya bars tattooed guests from the large baths unless the tattoo is covered, and it sells the cover itself. The wording is exact about what counts: a cover seal of the hotel’s own specification, bought on site, and the tattoo hidden completely. Nothing is said about a size ceiling, so the practical limit is how much skin one of their seals will hide.

Best for: One or two small pieces that a bought seal can cover, in a hotel that says so in writing

Buy the seal at the desk; the rule is published under the day-use plans and applies to the large baths, indoor and open-air. Seventy rooms, buffet meals, sulfur chloride water at pH 8.3. Day-use plans with a meal are sold as well as overnight stays, and the same tattoo sentence sits under both. Reservations run through a central line, 9:00 to 19:00.

Ooedo Onsen Monogatari Kounkaku

大江戸温泉物語幸雲閣

Kounkaku publishes the identical sentence its sister house does, word for word: no large baths with a visible tattoo, but a paid cover seal of the hotel’s specification makes them usable so long as the tattoo disappears under it. The two hotels share an owner, and we recorded the rule from each one’s own page rather than from the other’s.

A hundred and sixteen rooms drawing on three separate springs, which is unusual even in this valley, at pH 7.6 to 8.6. Day bathing is sold as well as overnight stays. The published rate on the tourism association’s table starts at 10,400 yen for two sharing, the lowest of the big Naruko hotels.

The bathhouse publishes no tattoo rule, and neither does Osaki City, which owns it. What it does publish is a private open-air bath you can take on your own: 50 minutes for 1,100 yen on top of the entry fee, asked for at the front desk or booked by phone. That is the only answer here we can stand behind, because the shared halls have no stated rule at all.

Best for: A tattooed traveler who wants an hour of Naruko water alone rather than a negotiation at a ticket window

Closed since 3 September 2026 for work on the spring supply. Osaki City’s page, updated 1 September, gave the closure as 3 to 10 September; the tourism association posted on 10 September that it runs 当面の間, for the time being, with no end date, and the hand bath and foot bath at the station are down for the same reason. When open: 09:00–21:30, last admission 21:00, year-round. Adults 660 yen, children 330. Sulfur sodium sulfate chloride water. Bathe once and the desk gives you a re-entry ticket for the same day; the tatami rest hall is free from 10:00 to 16:00. Body soap and showers are provided, shampoo, conditioner, dryers and towels cost extra. Run by Naruko Machizukuri, the town development company.

Naruko Onsen Yumoto Kissho

鳴子温泉湯元吉祥

Kissho says nothing about tattoos anywhere on its site, so the shared baths are an unknown and we treat them as one. What it does publish is four private baths on the ground floor, all of them free, none of them reservable: you walk down, and if the lamp outside is dark the room is yours. That is four chances an evening to bathe with nobody watching, which is why this is a private-bath listing.

Best for: Four free private baths and no booking sheet, so a late arrival is not shut out of them

The four are a hinoki tub for up to eight, a brick tub for two, a tile tub for two and a rock tub for six, all on the first floor, open 14:00 to 01:00 and again 05:00 to 11:00. First come, first served, no reservation: a lamp at the door lights when the bolt is thrown. The operator calls free private baths unusual for Naruko, and on the evidence of the other houses in town it is right. The large baths run 15:00 to 11:00 and close 02:00 to 03:00 for cleaning. There are no towels in the large bath rooms; carry your own down in the basket from your room. Fifty-nine rooms, run by Kyoritsu Resort. No day bathing.

Genzo-no-yu Naruko Kanko Hotel

No tattoo rule is published for the two large baths, so treat them as unanswered. The hotel does publish three free private baths along a corridor it calls Yuoto-no-koji, and states plainly that they are for staying guests only. Booking a night is therefore the whole of the answer here, and the day-use ticket does not reach them.

Best for: A tattooed guest travelling with someone who cannot manage steps: one of the three private baths is wheelchair accessible

Three free private baths, no charge on top of the room. Ichi-no-yu Kohaku is hiba-lined, laid out for five or six, built barrier-free with two showers, handrails and wheelchair access into the bathing room itself. Ni-no-yu Moegi is a round Shigaraki ceramic tub for two or three. The two large baths, Genzo-no-yu for men and Shizuka-no-yu for women, are closed 04:00 to 04:30 for cleaning and are chlorinated for hygiene. Day bathing is 1,500 yen for adults, 12:00 to 15:00 with last entry at 14:00, and only on Sundays, public holidays and during the autumn colors. A hundred and two rooms.

Naruko Hotel

名湯の宿鳴子ホテル

Nothing on the hotel’s site addresses tattoos, and its two big open-air bath halls are shared, so the honest reading is that they are unanswered. The private bath is not: Kokeshi-no-yu is booked by the group for 50 minutes, priced by how many of you there are, and it is large enough that the hotel jokes it hardly counts as a private bath. Pay for it and the tattoo question does not arise.

Best for: A group that wants one big tub to itself rather than a two-person box

Kokeshi-no-yu takes 16:00 to 22:50 and 06:00 to 08:50, by reservation in advance or at the desk on the day, 3,300 yen for two to four people and 4,400 yen for five to fifteen. The house baths are Basho-no-yu and the hinoki Tama-no-yu, each with its own open-air section, plus a blue-flagstone open-air bath, a koyamaki-wood barrel bath and a sitting bath for half-immersion. Three springs of its own, sulfate, sodium chloride and sulfur chloride, and the operator says the color of the water shifts with the outside air. Founded in 1873. The tourism association notes day bathing is off on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Ryokan Ohnuma

百年ゆ宿旅館大沼

Ohnuma has seven indoor baths and publishes no rule for any of them, so those stay unanswered. Its answer for anyone who would rather not find out is Mori-no-yu, a private open-air bath on the hillside behind the inn, taken one party at a time for thirty minutes at 1,650 yen a head. It is a walk of about ten minutes, or the front desk will drive you.

Best for: A cure stay of several nights where the bath you take alone is a walk into the woods

The inn calls Mori-no-yu a bath for washing the mind, and enforces that literally: no soap or shampoo is provided and you may not bring your own. Children of primary-school age pay 550 yen and younger ones nothing. Bears closed the bath from mid-December 2025, and the inn announced on 7 March 2026 that it had been back in use for over two months with no further sightings; the inn next door in Naruko shut its own detached bath over bear reports in May 2026, so ask when you book. The day-use rest plan is suspended. Ohnuma sells a modern version of toji, the cure stay, including self-catering nights, a fasting program, a workation plan and a family stay for parents before and after a birth, so a single night with dinner is only one of several ways to be here.

Naruko Fuga

大人の隠れ家鳴子風雅

No tattoo rule appears anywhere on Fuga’s site, so its two large baths are an open question. The house sells a private open-air bath instead: one party, sixty minutes, 2,200 yen, booked before you arrive and limited to people staying the night. Book that at the same time as the room and the shared baths become optional.

Best for: Reserving the private open-air bath weeks ahead instead of hoping a key is free at the desk

Reserve the private bath before arrival, not on the night. The large baths run 15:00 to 24:00 and 06:00 to 10:00, one indoor and one open-air on each side, with a step down into the water that the inn warns about. Sulfur sodium chloride water at pH 8.0 coming out of the ground at 97.3°C, part-diluted for temperature. Twenty-four rooms, sold as an adults’ retreat. The inn closed for part of February 2026, so check the calendar for winter dates.

Ryokan Kanshichiyu

旅館勘七湯

Nothing on Kanshichiyu’s site mentions tattoos, and its large bath runs around the clock, which means anyone might walk in. The small bath is the answer, and the inn explains exactly how: when nobody is in it, anyone may take it privately for free, borrowing a wooden board from the desk that reads occupied and standing it at the door. Read the inn’s own caveat before relying on it, because the door does not lock.

Best for: A cheap night in the old cure quarter with a bath you can hold for half an hour at a time

Thirty minutes is the rough limit and the board is the only lock, so this is privacy by agreement rather than by bolt. At New Year and in Golden Week the inn may decline private use altogether, though it says it will still discuss it with guests who have a disability, elderly guests and families with infants. The large bath is free-flowing and open 24 hours. Two waters, a pure bicarbonate spring at pH 6.6 and a salt and Glauber’s-salt bicarbonate spring at pH 7.4. Day bathing is 500 yen, 08:00 to 20:00. The house dates itself to 1784 and is the oldest in Higashi-Naruko.

Takuhide

名湯秘湯うなぎ湯の宿旬樹庵琢ひで

Takuhide publishes no tattoo rule for its five shared baths, and one of those baths is mixed and closed to men, which tells you the house thinks about who sees whom without ever reaching the question we care about. The answer here is a single room. Matsushima, the special room on the ground floor of the main building, has the inn’s only room-side open-air bath, free-flowing from the source, plus an indoor tub of its own.

Best for: One room in the valley where the open-air bath is yours for the night and nobody else uses it

Book Matsushima specifically; it is a single room and the rest of the house has no private bath. Its open-air tub has no washing area, and the indoor tub is not free-flowing, so you adjust the temperature yourself with cold water. A wooden deck was added in the last refit. The shared baths are Tsuru-no-yu, Kame-no-yu, Ishibashi-no-yu, Shakuyaku-no-yu and Chosei-no-yu, the middle two swapping between men and women by the hour, and there is a mixed open-air bath that men are not allowed to use. The water is strongly alkaline at pH 9.1 to 9.3, the slippery unagi-yu Nakayamadaira is known for. Fourteen rooms.

Traveler’s note

Two things to check before you book a room for its bath. Bears have closed detached open-air baths at two inns here, one of them since May with no reopening date, and a private bath that is shut is not an answer, so those inns are not listed. And the Rikuu East line is suspended west of Naruko-Onsen with replacement buses, which matters if you meant to carry on toward Shinjo. The valley’s bath-hopping sticker ticket stopped being sold in April.

Does any Naruko bath allow tattoos?

Two hotels under one chain allow a tattoo that a house cover seal hides, sold at the desk. One day-use bathhouse publishes a size rule instead: a small tattoo is fine, a large one is refused at the door, and it offers no seal and has no private bath to fall back on. Nobody else in the valley has published anything either way.

What is the cheapest private bath here?

The town’s own bathhouse rents an open-air bath for fifty minutes on top of its ordinary entry, which is the first municipal bath in this guide to do that. Several inns also rent one to guests at no charge.

Is a private bath always private?

Not quite. One inn here takes its small bath privately by hanging a wooden board on the door, and says plainly that the door does not bolt from the inside. The listing says which.

How do I get to Naruko from Sendai?

Twelve minutes on the Tohoku Shinkansen to Furukawa, then about three quarters of an hour up the Rikuu East line: two and a half hours all told once you allow for the wait. The local trains are sparse, so check the connection rather than turning up.
