Two seals’ worth. The group states that a tattoo may bathe if it fits under two of the hotel’s own cover seals, which are 10×15 cm and 250 yen each at the front desk — 300 cm² between them, which is more than most chains allow and is sold on site rather than assumed.

Best for: Lake Chuzenji on a normal budget, with the seal sold at the desk

The seal size and price are published in the same FAQ answer: タトゥーカバーシール 10cm×15cm, 250 yen a sheet, sold at the front desk. The rule covers the pool as well as the baths.

Asaya Hotel

A one-point tattoo under a seal, and nothing larger. The hotel asks tattooed guests to keep out of the large bath and use a private bath or the one in their room instead — then makes an exception for a single small piece a cover seal hides. The seals are sold in the sixth-floor shop, so you can buy them after you arrive.

No seal size is published. “One point” is the limit the hotel sets, and it is a smaller allowance than the chains that publish centimeters.

Best for: Staying by the shrines rather than up a mountain, with a bath of your own

The only listing in this guide that is in Nikko town itself rather than up at Chuzenji or out at Kinugawa: it is next door to the Tamozawa villa, walking distance from the shrines.

Kinugawa Park Hotels

The large bath is closed to tattooed guests, and the hotel names the way round in the same sentence: book a room with its own open-air bath, or reserve the private open-air bath — 2,000 yen plus tax for fifty minutes, booked in advance. It is one of the few places that tells you the alternative before you have to ask for it.

Book the private bath in advance; it is not a walk-up. The rooms with their own open-air bath are a separate rate, so choose the plan rather than hoping to switch on arrival.
