Tattoo friendly onsen in Shirahama

Shirahama is the resort town of the Kii coast — a white beach, a rock bath in the surf that has been there since the Manyoshu, and a shore of big hotels. The town runs the bathhouses and publishes no tattoo rule for any of them, so this page is about the hotels, which answer the question three ways: a seal with a size on it, a private bath in place of the shared one, or a bath in the room.

Cover seal required

Smaller tattoos accepted when fully covered by a waterproof patch. What this means

Yuzaki, ten minutes from the station Hotel (luxury) Confirmed

Nanki-Shirahama Marriott Hotel

Two seals’ worth, 8×10 cm each: a tattoo that two of them hide completely may use the top-floor baths, and one they do not cannot. The hotel says to ask the front desk for the seals. If yours is bigger than that, the five private baths on the same floor are the way in — 3,000 yen for fifty minutes on a weekday, 3,500 on a holiday, all of them looking at the Pacific.

Best for: A small tattoo in the rooftop bath, or a large one in a private bath with the same view

160 cm² across two seals is the same allowance Hoshino Resorts used to publish and less than Route Inn's single 11.4×20. The five private baths are the hotel's answer for anything bigger.

Shirarahama, on the beach Large hotel Confirmed

Shiraraso Grand Hotel

Two seals’ worth, about 7×11 cm each. The hotel’s bath page refuses tattooed guests in one sentence and lets them in in the next, on condition that two cover seals hide the tattoo completely. There is also a private bath for guests, 2,200 yen for forty-five minutes, which is the route for anything larger.

Best for: The beach itself: it is across the road, and the two bath halls look at it

Two bath halls, Shiokaze and Matsukaze, which swap between men and women at 15:00 and 5:00. The private bath runs 16:00 to 23:00 and 7:30 to 8:30 and is for staying guests.

Shirahama, a short walk from the beach Resort (Relo Hotels; members first, visitor plans for the rest) Confirmed

Point Vacation Nanki-Shirahama

Two seals’ worth. The group states that a tattoo may bathe if it fits under two of its own cover seals, 10×15 cm each and 250 yen at the front desk — 300 cm², the largest allowance in Shirahama. The property is a members’ club first, and sells its unbooked rooms to visitors, so check the plan you are booking is one of those.

Best for: The biggest seal allowance in town, if a visitor plan is open

The seal size and price are in the group FAQ: タトゥーカバーシール 10cm×15cm, 250 yen a sheet, sold at the desk. The property page publishes no separate rule. Large bath and open-air bath for each sex, a sauna, and jacuzzi baths in the premium rooms.

Private baths only

Ink is fine in a private or in-room bath. Communal baths are restricted, or the policy is unconfirmed. What this means

Shirahama, on the cape at the south end of the beach Ryokan (Kyoritsu Resort) Confirmed

Hamachidori no Yu Kaishu

Not the large baths — and the ryokan says in the same answer where to go instead: the private open-air baths. There are two, Sekisho-no-yu and Iwato-no-yu, both free and taken as you find them, no booking. Nothing to cover in either, and the sunrise from the second is the reason people set an alarm.

Best for: A tattooed guest who wants an open-air bath over the Pacific without negotiating for it

The house also has a mixed-bathing open-air bath entered in bathing wear, ninety steps down toward the sea. The FAQ answer names the private baths and not that one, so ask at the desk before using it. Same company as Dormy Inn and La Vista Kusatsu Hills, and the same answer as La Vista: private baths, not seals.

Ezura, on the north shore Resort hotel (luxury) Confirmed

FIVE SPRING RESORT THE SHIRAHAMA

Every room has its own hot spring bath, fed around the clock from the source. There is a large bath as well and no published rule about it — the room bath needs none.

Best for: The most comfortable way in Shirahama to make the question irrelevant

The site's wording is 全室24時間湯元源泉掛け流し温泉完備: source-fed hot spring water in every room, all day. No tattoo policy is published; ask when you book if you want one in writing.

Shirahama, on the hill above the beach Resort hotel Confirmed

INFINITO Hotel & Spa Nanki-Shirahama

Book one of the two Lanai suites and the bath is yours: both have a private open-air bath on the terrace, source-fed, facing the Pacific. The three shared baths — the infinity one, the rooftop one, the private-source one — carry no published rule, so the suite is the answer here.

Best for: A sunset over the sea from a bath nobody else is in

The suites are the Ocean View Lanai Suite and the Ocean View Lanai Junior Suite, both described as 温泉露天風呂付 with 源泉かけ流し. The other room types share the baths downstairs. No tattoo policy is published.

Shirarahama, at the north end of the beach Hotel Confirmed

Hotel Sanrakuso

The rooms on the top two floors have an open-air bath of their own, looking at the beach. The two large baths downstairs run on two different springs and carry no published rule, so the room is the answer.

Best for: Two springs in one building, one of them in your own room

The ninth-floor Mashirano rooms and the eighth-floor Hama Suisho rooms are the ones with an open-air bath. The hotel draws on two sources, a mountain spring and a sea one, for its bath halls. No tattoo policy is published.

Traveler’s note Saki-no-yu, the rock pool in the surf that everyone comes to Shirahama for, is run by the town, and the town’s pages carry its hours and its five-hundred-yen price and nothing about tattoos — the same for Muro-no-yu, Shirara-yu and the Shirasuna open-air bath. This site does not list a bath whose rule it has not read, so none of them is below. Read the signage at the door.
Common questions

Shirahama questions

Can I use Saki-no-yu with a tattoo?

Nobody has published the answer. The town runs it and its pages say when it opens and what it costs and nothing else; the ryokan association’s bath-hopping page says nothing either. That is why it is not listed here rather than listed as a maybe. If you go, the rules are on the sign at the entrance, and they are the ones that count.

Which hotels publish a seal size?

Two, and a third by its group. The Marriott allows two seals of 8×10 cm, Shiraraso two of about 7×11, and Point Vacation — a Relo Hotels property — two of 10×15 at 250 yen each from the desk, the most generous in town. All three also have a private bath to book if the tattoo is bigger than the seals.

And if my tattoo is too big for a seal?

Kaishu answers that in its own FAQ: not the large baths, but two private open-air baths that are free and take no booking. Otherwise a room with its own bath — every room at FIVE SPRING, the two Lanai suites at Infinito, the top two floors at Sanrakuso — and water nobody else is in has no rule attached to it.

How do I get there?

Two and a half hours from Shin-Osaka on the Kuroshio limited express to Shirahama station, then a bus or taxi of ten to fifteen minutes to the beach. Or an hour’s flight from Haneda to Nanki-Shirahama airport, which is six minutes from the hotels on the headland. Kinosaki, the other town reached from Osaka, is on the opposite coast — they are not a pair to do together.
