Tattoo friendly onsen in Shodoshima

This is the rare island where the cover seal is normal and the size is printed. Olivean Shodoshima Yuhigaoka Hotel sells one sheet of 85 by 105 millimeters at its shop and lets you into a ridge-top bath if the tattoo disappears under it. Shodoshima International Hotel hands out two seals of 8 by 10 centimeters at the front desk, three minutes from Angel Road. Bay Resort Hotel Shodoshima goes the other way, keeping tattoos out of its twelfth-floor bath and renting five log huts on the shore instead, each with an open-air tub for one party at a time.

Allowed under one cover seal, and the hotel prints the size. Buy a tattoo cover sheet at the shop, 85 mm by 105 mm, and if the tattoo disappears under it you may bathe. The rule covers ink, fashion tattoos and tattoo stickers alike, so there is no arguing that a temporary one does not count. Day visitors are held to the same rule as guests.

Best for: A traveler with one tattoo small enough for a single sheet who wants the sunset off the west coast

オリビアンの湯 is an alkaline simple spring with a source temperature of 25.2°C, which the hotel calls rare on the island. A 天空の露天風呂 runs off the main bath along the ridge, with a low-temperature sauna beside it. Guests bathe free 15:00 to 24:00 and 05:00 to 09:00, sauna 16:00 to 22:00. Day visitors come 15:00 to 20:00 with last entry 19:30, 1,200 yen for adults and 600 for children, towel set rented at 300 yen. Mixed bathing stops at seven years old and phones are banned in the changing room. The hotel sits on the coast the Japanese sunset list picked out, which is where the Yuhigaoka in its name comes from.

Allowed if two cover seals hide the tattoo, and the hotel supplies them. Ask at the front desk for the 8 cm by 10 cm seals; the bath is open to you if the tattoo vanishes under two of them. If it will not, the top-floor executive room has an open-air tub of its own and no rule attached to it, which is the second way in here.

Best for: Walking out of a bath at the waterline and onto the sandbar to Yoshima at low tide

Two baths that swap sexes: オリーブの湯 at 83 m² and 浜風の湯 at 60 m², both 15:00 to 24:00 and 05:00 to 09:00. The house is blunt about what is thermal: 温泉は露天風呂のみとなっており、内湯は沸かし湯となっております, so only the open-air tubs carry the spring, an alkaline hypotonic low-temperature water drawn at 28.0°C from Yakatazaki and heated to 42.0°C. 浜風の湯 sits so close to Angel Road that the hotel has fenced the view for privacy and says so. Guests over twelve pay a 150 yen bathing tax. The 露天風呂付きエグゼクティブルーム is 60 m² for four or five people at the top of the main building. There is also a seasonal garden pool and a pair of Yadon-themed rooms.

The twelfth-floor bath is closed to tattooed guests and the FAQ repeats it without offering a seal. What is open is the row of five private open-air baths, each let to one party of up to four or five for 45 minutes at 3,000 yen, with their own dressing table and their own entrance. The same water reaches them. If you are here in summer, the FAQ also says the pool is fine as long as swimwear or a rash guard covers the tattoo.

Best for: Booking 45 minutes of the Inland Sea for four people and nobody else

The private baths are log-cabin style huts, 15:00 to 24:00 with the last party shown in at 23:00. The shared bath sits on the twelfth floor with glass across the front and the ceiling, plus its own open-air tub, a far-infrared sauna and a shampoo bar; guests bathe 15:00 to 24:00 and 06:00 to 10:00, sauna until 22:00. The spring is the hotel’s own, 湯元しょうどしま温泉 雅の湯, drawn from 1,600 m under the grounds: an iron and carbon dioxide bearing sodium chloride water, hypertonic, neutral at pH 6.4 and cold at source. The refusal wording on the bath page is ※刺青（ファッションタトゥー含む）をされている方、過度の飲酒をされている方のご利用およびスマートフォン・携帯電話のお持ち込みはご遠慮ください。 Same owner as Shodoshima International Hotel.

Traveler’s note

Olive Onsen Manten-no-yu, the big day bath at Tonosho, refuses at the door and says in writing that fashion tattoos and single small designs are no exception. Sun Olive Onsen publishes no rule either way and has run shortened hours of 15:00 to 20:00 since July 2026, with heavy oil deliveries restricted. The Bay Resort will let a tattoo into its summer pool if swimwear or a rash guard covers it. Only the open-air tubs at the International Hotel are spring water; the indoor ones are heated.

Can I use a shared bath in Shodoshima with a tattoo?

At two hotels, if the seal fits. Olivean sells a single cover sheet of 85 by 105 millimeters and applies the rule to ink, fashion tattoos and stick-on ones alike. Shodoshima International Hotel allows two seals of 8 by 10 centimeters and supplies them itself. Bay Resort Hotel Shodoshima closes its shared bath and offers no seal.

Which Shodoshima hotels have a bath I do not share?

Bay Resort Hotel Shodoshima rents five open-air baths in log cabins by the water, 45 minutes for 3,000 yen, up to four or five people, with the last party shown in at 23:00. Shodoshima International Hotel has one 60 square meter executive room on the top floor with an open-air tub of its own and no rule attached to it.

Can I bathe on Shodoshima without staying the night?

At Olivean, on the same seal rule as guests: 1,200 yen for an adult between 15:00 and 20:00, last entry 19:30, with a towel set for 300 yen. Phones are banned in the changing room. Neither of the island’s two day baths is an option for a tattooed visitor.

How do I get to Shodoshima from Takamatsu?

By ferry from Takamatsu port to Tonosho. The high-speed boat crosses in 35 minutes for 1,400 yen, the car ferry in an hour for 700, and the walks between berths add about ten minutes at each end. Olivean and the International Hotel are on the Tonosho side; the Bay Resort sits above Sakate on the east coast.
