Happo-no-Yu

白馬八方温泉 八方の湯

No cover and no private room needed. Happo-one Kaihatsu, the company that runs all four Hakuba Happo Onsen day baths, answers the question in the FAQ on its own inquiry page: people with tattoos may use its baths. The English version of the same page says they are welcome.

Best for: The biggest of the Happo day baths, open every day of the year until nine at night

Open all year, 10:00–21:00, last entry 20:30, no regular closing day; it shuts for maintenance on announced dates. Adults 1,000 yen, elementary-school children 600 yen, ages 3 to preschool 400 yen. Indoor and open-air bath on each side, no sauna. Soap, shampoo and dryers free; towel 300 yen, rental towel set 600 yen. Cards and QR payment accepted. Swimsuits are not allowed. The operator’s English FAQ wording: “People with tattoos are welcome to use our facility.” A baby bath and baby chair are kept here. Mixed bathing for children stops at age 6.

Mimizuku-no-Yu

白馬八方温泉 みみずくの湯

Tattoos are allowed, with nothing to cover. Mimizuku-no-Yu belongs to the same operator as Happo-no-Yu, and the company’s FAQ answers for all four of its day baths at once: people with tattoos may use them.

Best for: A soak on the walk between Hakuba Station and Happo, with the Sanzan peaks behind Happo-one

Open all year, 10:00–21:00, last entry 20:30. Adults 800 yen, children 500 yen, small children 300 yen. One indoor and one open-air bath on each side. Pay by card or QR code as well as cash. The operator says bathers can see night cherry blossoms from the tub in season. A baby bath and baby chair are kept here.

Obinata-no-Yu

白馬八方温泉 おびなたの湯

In the green season it is a shared outdoor bath, and the operator’s FAQ for its four day baths says people with tattoos may use them. In winter the question does not arise: from late December to the end of March the whole bath is hired out privately by the hour, booked online.

Best for: An open-air soak nearest the source, or a whole bath to your group in the snow

Shared bathing 25 April to 31 October 2026, 12:00–18:00, last entry 17:30. Adults 800 yen, children 500 yen, small children 300 yen; cash only. Open-air only, one tub each side. Winter 2025–26 it ran as a private open-air bath from 20 December to 31 March, one-hour slots from 13:00 to 19:00 with a meeting point at a bus stop, booked through the operator’s Chillnn page; the winter price is not printed on the operator’s site. Swimsuits are not allowed in the shared season. Closed for maintenance on announced days.

Sato-no-Yu

白馬八方温泉 郷の湯

Allowed, nothing to cover. Sato-no-Yu is the fourth of the Happo day baths, and the operator’s FAQ covers it with the others: people with tattoos may use the baths.

Best for: An evening bath in the middle of Happo during ski season, on the way back from the gondola

Winter only. The 2025–26 season ran 27 October 2025 to 31 March 2026, 16:00–20:00, last entry 19:30; the English page gives the regular season as 1 December to 31 March, and the operator opened it early when Happo-no-Yu closed for renovation. Cash only: 800 yen for adults, 500 for children, 300 for small children. Indoor bath only, one each side. Opened in 1988.

Hotel Goryukan

ホテル五龍館

No restriction. The hotel says it twice: its onsen and sauna page states there are no limits on bathing with tattoos, and its FAQ answers that guests with tattoos may use the onsen sauna without restriction. Day visitors bathe under the same page. There is no private bath, so the shared one is the offer.

FAQ wording: 当ホテルの温泉サウナは、タトゥーがある方もご利用いただけます。（特に制限はございません。） Staying guests: onsen 6:00–10:00 and 15:00–23:30, sauna 15:00–23:30. Day bathing without booking, reception 15:00–19:00, out by 21:00, adults 2,000 yen, under 12 1,000 yen, under 6 free, towel included. Large bath and open-air bath on the Hakuba Happo source; dry sauna at about 100°C with self-loyly, and a cold bath of drinkable groundwater pumped from 65 m. Swimsuits and underwear are not allowed. The FAQ says there is no private onsen or private sauna. Open year-round with announced closing days; the free guest shuttle runs December to March only. Bookings online only.

Shirouma-so

信州白馬八方温泉 しろうま荘

The ryokan’s English onsen page marks its bath “Tattoo Friendly” in so many words. The bath is small, Tago stone, four or five people at most, so the inn asks guests to take turns at busy times. It can also be hired privately between 11:00 and 15:00 through the front desk. The Japanese page does not repeat the tattoo line.

Best for: A small family inn in Happo whose English page settles the tattoo question before you ask

Bath hours 6:00–9:00 and 15:00–23:00; free-flowing Happo water until 22:00, with filtration used alongside and no added water. Swimwear prohibited. Private use of the bath 11:00–15:00, arranged at the front desk; the inn publishes no price for it. Day bathing by phone reservation. The inn describes itself as a modern Japanese ryokan on the site of the old Hosono hamlet, where ski minshuku began, keeping 300-year-old farmhouse pillars in the entrance.

Hakuba Hotel Pipe no Kemuri

白馬ホテルパイプのけむり

Allowed, as long as you have no organized-crime ties. The chain’s FAQ, answering for Hakuba by name, says fashion tattoos, cultural tattoos and one-point tattoos may use the large bath with consideration for others. It adds that staff may ask you to avoid excessive exposure or to cover up with a towel where you can. Note that the bath here is not a hot spring.

Note: The bath is not a hot spring. The hotel adds stones from Tamagawa Onsen to heated water, and its FAQ says so.

Best for: A cheap buffet hotel a minute from the slopes where the big bath has a written tattoo rule

Not onsen water. The FAQ says of Hakuba: 温泉ではございませんが、浴槽には秋田県・玉川温泉産の「焼山石」を入れております (not a hot spring; Yakeyama stones from Tamagawa Onsen in Akita are placed in the tub). Large bath and open-air bath, one each side, 15:00–23:00 and 6:00–10:00. The same FAQ answer also says: 過度な露出はお控えいただくか、可能な範囲でタオル等で覆うなどのご配慮をお願いする場合がございます. All rooms have a unit bath. Dinner buffet with 90-minute free-flow drinks. Winter 2026–27 (19 Dec to 31 Mar) is being sold on the hotel’s own site first; the hotel says OTA sales start later.

Courtyard by Marriott Hakuba

Seal required. The hotel turns tattooed bathers away from the onsen unless the tattoo is hidden under cover seals, and it specifies two seals of 8 by 10 cm. Anything those two cannot cover is out. The other way in is a Premier Room, 27 of which have Hakuba onsen water piped into the room’s own bath.

Best for: A Western chain hotel in Echoland with an onsen, if two seals will cover you, or an in-room onsen if not

Seal size and count published: two seals of 8 × 10 cm. The hotel does not say it sells them; ask at the front desk. Onsen for staying guests, free, 6:00–10:00 and 15:00–24:00; sodium chloride spring from the Himekawa; open-air bath and indoor bath. Premier Rooms (27 of 72, 33.7–35 m²) are sold as 温泉付, with Hakuba onsen water drawn into the room. The whole hotel closes 16–20 November 2026 for statutory inspection. Phone reservations have ended; book online.

Hotel Sierra Resort Hakuba

The hotel publishes no tattoo rule for its shared baths, so do not read silence as a yes. What it does offer is three private baths, reserved at the front desk on the day after check-in, for staying guests only: a tatami-style Japanese bath, a Roman-style bath and a goemon-buro iron tub in a separate building.

Best for: Couples who want their own bath with a view of Tsugaike and Norikura-dake

Private baths Washitsu-buro, Thermae Romae and Goemon-buro, 6:00–10:00 and 13:50–23:45, booked at the front desk after check-in; no phone or email bookings. No price is published on the page. The Japanese-style and Roman baths are step-free with handrails. The shared bath, Kominka-no-Yu, is in an Edo-period farmhouse moved to the site: large indoor bath, hinoki and rock open-air baths, sodium bicarbonate spring, 6:00–11:00 and 13:00–2:00. Day bathers 13:00–17:00, adults 1,500 yen (2,000 in peak periods).

Yamanosato Hotel Hakuba Hifumi

山の郷ホテル 白馬ひふみ

Hifumi publishes nothing about tattoos. Six of its ten rooms have their own open-air bath fed with Happo onsen water straight from the source, and there is a family bath, Yui-no-Yu, that any guest can reserve free for 60 minutes. Both avoid the shared baths entirely.

Best for: An open-air bath on your own terrace in the middle of Happo

Rooms with open-air baths: suites Toki, Sen (hinoki) and Nagomi (hinoki), and rooms Kaede (Shigaraki), Fuki (hinoki) and Hina (Shigaraki); four standard Japanese rooms have no open-air bath. The in-room baths use the Happo source as it comes, per the hotel. Private family bath Yui-no-Yu: free, 60 minutes, booked at check-in or ahead, check-in to 23:00 and 6:00 to check-out. Two large baths alternate between men and women. Free pick-up from Hakuba Station in a 9-seat bus. The English site says enquiries are by email, not phone.

Traumerei

オーベルジュ トロイメライ

No tattoo rule is published, and none is needed: there is no shared bath. Two private baths, Petite Nice and Petite Cannes, are reserved per room for 50 minutes and can be used again after check-out. The auberge states plainly that they are not hot spring water.

Note: Nothing here is hot spring water. The private baths are ordinary heated water, and the auberge’s FAQ says so.

Best for: A French dinner and a private stone bath under the stars, no onsen pretensions

Ordinary heated water. FAQ: 貸切風呂は温泉ですか？ 温泉ではありません。 and no bathing tax is charged because it is not onsen. Two private baths in Spanish and Italian natural stone with terraces, 8:00–23:00, 50 minutes per room plus 10 minutes’ cleaning, booked at check-in or ahead, usable again while you stay and after check-out if free. The Executive Suite (42 m², renovated August 2022) has its own semi-open-air bath. Other rooms have unit baths. Open since 1981. Free winter shuttle to the ski areas. A Google review quoted on the site mentions tattoos; that is a guest, not the house.

Hakuba Highland Hotel

The hotel says nothing about tattoos on its onsen, rooms, facilities or FAQ pages, so the shared baths, including the day-use Tenjin-no-Yu, are an open question. Staying guests can book the private bath, Happo, at the front desk on the day: 50 minutes for 3,000 yen, with the same Northern Alps view as the shared open-air bath.

Best for: The full Northern Alps panorama from a private tub you can book the same day

One private bath, 八方 (Happo): 3,000 yen per 50-minute slot, booked at the front desk on the day, staying guests only; bathroom and toilet wheelchair-accessible. The hotel’s own spring, Hakuba Himekawa Onsen, sodium chloride at about pH 7.4. Guest bath Warabidaira-no-Yu 5:00–10:00 and 15:00–23:00; Tenjin-no-Yu for guests 11:00–24:00 and for day visitors 11:00–18:00, last entry 17:00, 1,000 yen, children 3 to 12 500 yen. Rooms have shower booths only, and the hotel says the in-room water is not onsen.

Hakuba Mominoki Hotel

白馬樅の木ホテル

The hotel publishes no tattoo rule for its shared bath, Shobei-no-Yu, in Japanese or English. The answer is its private hot spring bath on Happo onsen water: 45-minute slots at 3,500 yen for up to four people, booked at the front desk. Unusually for Hakuba, people who are not staying can book it too, the day before or on the day, by phone.

Best for: A private Happo onsen bath you can book without a room, after a day on Happo-one

Private hot spring bath 15:00–20:45 in 45-minute slots, 3,500 yen per group of up to four including tax and service; towels handed out at reception; shampoo, conditioner, body soap, dryer and toner provided. Staying guests book at the desk or take a plan that includes it; non-guests reserve by phone the day before or the same day. Shared bath Shobei-no-Yu (open-air, indoor bath and sauna), renovated at the end of 2015: guests 5:00–10:30 and 12:30–24:00; day visitors 12:30–21:00, adults 1,500 yen, children 700 yen, towel 300 yen, may be turned away when full. The Japanese page gives day-visitor morning hours as 5:00–10:30 and the English page as 5:00–9:00. 75 rooms.

Vive Boutique Hotel & Spa (VIVE Hakuba)

Vive has no shared bath and publishes no tattoo rule. Its spa rents a private mineral plunge bath for up to three adults, in 45-minute sessions for 6,000 yen, booked and paid online. Hotel guests and outside visitors book the same way.

Best for: A private soak for two or three in Echoland without leaving the bar strip

Private Mineral Plunge Bath: 6,000 yen per 45-minute session for up to 3 people; towels, dryer, shampoo, conditioner, body soap and face care provided. Spa open 10:00–20:00, all bookings online and prepaid. If you also book a massage, the bath must come first the same day. The spa does not say whether the water is hot spring water; it describes it only as mineral-rich. Rooms are en-suite with tiled bathrooms. The hotel’s dining room was listed as coming soon.
