Tattoo friendly onsen in Ito

Ito keeps more old neighborhood bathhouses than any town this guide has surveyed, and not one of them publishes a tattoo rule. The answers lie along the front and up the hill instead. Laforet Ito Onsen Yunoniwa takes a tattoo under two cover seals of 8 by 10 centimeters and keeps three free family baths unlocked all night for anything bigger. Hanafubuki scatters nine spring-fed bath houses through its own patch of woodland and has no large bath. Izuito Onsen Daitokan gives three of its six baths to one party at a time.

Two seals, 8cm × 10cm each, and the large bath is open to you; without them it is not. The hotel puts the apology and the exception in one sentence and sends anything unclear to the front desk. It also runs three free family baths that take no reservation, so a tattoo too large for two patches still has somewhere to go.

Three family baths, Ichi-no-yu, Ni-no-yu and San-no-yu, free flowing, open 24 hours, no booking. No tattoo rule is published on the property’s own pages, so this rests on the rooms. Kai Ito publishes a room type with its own open-air hot spring bath, drawing on the four sources the inn owns. Book that and the shared bath hall, the spring-fed pool and the foot bath are all optional.

Best for: A room bath fed by one of four house springs, with a swimwear pool downstairs if you want company

Four sources producing about 600 liters a minute. Besides the bath hall there is a hot spring pool, kept at temperature year round by pouring source water into it, and a free-flowing foot bath facing the garden. The pool is worth knowing about: swimwear is worn, so a tattoo is simply seen rather than covered. Rooms are the Izu Hanagoyomi type, with screens dyed using Izu plants.

Izuito Onsen Daitokan

The inn publishes no tattoo rule, and it does not need one to be usable: three of its six baths are private, they cost nothing extra, and they are not reserved. You watch the lamp board in the lobby, walk to whichever is dark, and lock the door behind you. The house asks about 40 minutes a turn and lets you come back as often as you like.

Best for: The cheapest way on this page to bathe alone in real spring water, as often as you want, between 14:00 and 11:00 the next morning

Six baths: two large baths, a big open-air bath and three private ones, a goemon iron tub, an open-air tub and a lying-down tub. All open 14:00 to 11:00 the next day. Three sources yielding 297 liters a minute; the inn states that every bath, guest room baths included, runs with no added water, no recirculation and no filter. The large open-air bath is women’s 14:00–22:00 and men’s 22:00–11:00. Weakly alkaline simple spring. Dinner and room service were dropped: the rate is bed and a simple free breakfast.

Kyoritsu Resort runs this one, and the group rule is plain: no tattoo of any size in the large bath, use a room bath or a private bath instead. Here the private baths are three, they are free, and none of them takes a reservation. Note that they have no washing stations, so wash in the large bath or in your room first if you want to.

Best for: A stone tub hollowed out of a boulder, taken alone, in a village of thatched-looking cottages

The three are Ichi-no-yu Sekisho, a tub cut into a single huge stone; Ni-no-yu Chikusen, walled in bamboo; and San-no-yu Iwakura, ringed with rock. Hours 15:00–25:00 and 05:00–10:00, free, no booking, no washing stations. The large bath Mori-no-yu has ten kinds of tub and was reworked in December 2025 with a self-service sauna, a wooden barrel bath and two cold tubs. Foot bath 06:00–09:00 and 14:00–21:00, weather permitting.

There is no large bath here to be refused from. The inn scatters nine free-flowing bath houses through its own woodland and states that they are entered without a reservation, one party at a time. Twenty rooms and nine baths means the odds are usually with you.

The nine are Hina-no-yu, Kuromoji-yu, Hinoki-yuden, Sanpaya Tereke, Hyure Hyure Isepo, Oribe-yu, Shino-no-yu, Hisakata and Nubatama. Twenty rooms and three dining teahouses stand in the same wood. Day visitors can bathe too, 11:00–14:00, 50 minutes to a party, 1,800 yen a head or 1,500 with a meal. The Ito tourism association’s page still says seven baths and 4,000 tsubo of ground; the inn’s own page says nine and 5,000.

Seven rooms, no large bath, and two hot spring baths that are taken privately around the clock. One seats three and has a sauna; the other takes six. Guests check whether either is free from their phone anywhere in the building, so nobody waits in a corridor. The Maisonette and Platinum Suite rooms add a hot spring bath of their own; the King Doubles have a shower only.

Six detached two-story cottages, six groups a day, and the inn states that every one of them has an open-air bath. Each cottage in fact holds two baths, the upstairs one open to the sky and the Izu islands. No shared bath is advertised anywhere on the inn’s pages.

Six cottages, six parties a day, each a maisonette in wood done in a Taisho-era manner. Two baths per cottage, the upper one open-air with a sea view. Kaiseki dinner built on the season. The inn sits below Mount Omuro, which is a protected natural monument.

Read the refusal first: since 1 February 2025 the operator has asked people with tattoos, body paint included, not to enter, except in cases it recognizes under criteria it does not publish. Those criteria are not on the site, so treat the shared bath as closed. What remains is a room type with its own hot spring bath and Tenkyu-no-yu, a rooftop bath rented privately for an hour at 4,400 yen.

Four room types, all facing Sagami Bay: Standard 39 m², Corner Twin 62 m², Deluxe 62 m² and a 39 m² room with its own open-air hot spring bath. Large bath and rooftop open-air bath 06:00–11:00 and 15:00–24:30, on 54°C spring water. Tenkyu-no-yu, the rented rooftop bath, runs 07:00–11:00 and 15:00–22:00 at 4,400 yen an hour. Traveler’s note

Five of Ito’s Seven Lucky Gods bathhouses rent a family bath by the room, from 600 yen for 40 minutes at Ogawa Hotei-no-yu to 2,000 yen for an hour at Bishamonten Shiba-no-yu, and none of the five says a word about tattoos, so none is listed. Ito Hotel Juraku refuses tattooed bathers and names cover seals among the things that do not change its answer. Akazawa’s day-use bathhouse has turned tattooed visitors away since 1 February 2025.

Tokyo to Atami Shinkansen tickets The fast way to Izu is the Shinkansen to Atami, about 40 minutes from Tokyo, then the JR Ito line local, about 25 minutes to Ito. The Odoriko limited express does the whole ride with no change.
Izukyu Discovery Pass One or two days on the Izukyu line, the private railway that runs on from Ito to Izu-Kogen and Shimoda. Useful for the listings out at Izu-Kogen and Akazawa. It does not cover the Odoriko’s limited express charge or JR trains.

Can I use a shared bath in Ito with a tattoo?

At one hotel. Laforet Ito Onsen Yunoniwa admits a tattoo hidden under two cover seals of 8 by 10 centimeters and sends anything the sentence does not cover to the front desk. The town bathhouses publish no rule at all, and Ito Hotel Juraku refuses outright, seals included.

Which Ito inns have a bath of my own?

Hanafubuki has nine bath houses in its wood, entered without booking, one party at a time. Daitokan runs three free private baths off a lamp board in the lobby. Kazenokaori MORI Premier holds seven rooms and two private baths, and tells you from your phone when one comes free.

Can I bathe at Kai Ito or Akazawa with a tattoo?

Neither publishes a rule you can rely on, so book around it. Kai Ito sells a room with its own open-air bath on the four house springs, and its hot spring pool is swimwear-only. Akazawa Onsen Hotel refuses the shared bath and rents Tenkyu-no-yu on the roof for 4,400 yen an hour.

How do I get to Ito from Tokyo?

The Odoriko limited express covers Tokyo to Ito in 1 h 43 without a change. Izu-Kogen, where Hanafubuki and the cottage inns are, is fifteen minutes further down the Izukyu line and is part of the same city.
