Tattoo friendly onsen and sento in Nagoya

Nagoya’s hotels answer the tattoo question and its bath houses mostly refuse it. Mitsui Garden Hotel Nagoya Premier has dropped the restriction on body art outright. Five APA hotels admit a tattoo under two seals of 10 by 12 centimeters, and the four Route Inns under a cover seal of 11.4 by 20 that the desk sells. Two neighborhood bathhouses put their answer in writing: Hakusan Onsen says a public bathhouse admits anyone, and Pokapoka Onsen Shin-Moriyama-no-yu sells a 100-yen wristband and lets a tattoo of any size into the water once it is on.

No restrictions

Tattoos are welcome in every bath. Nothing to cover, nothing to book. What this means

Mitsui Garden Hotel Nagoya Premier

三井ガーデンホテル名古屋プレミア

Nothing to cover and no size limit. The hotel’s own bath page states that it has abolished the admission restriction on body art and tattoos, the wording Mitsui put on every bath-equipped property in the group. There is no seal to buy and no measurement to pass.

当ホテルではボディアート・タトゥ等の受入制限を撒廃しております。

Best for: A tattooed traveler who wants to walk into a hotel bath in Nagoya and be asked for nothing

Top-floor bath, guests only. The page names no spring and publishes no analysis, so treat it as heated tap water. The group notice dates the removal of the restriction to 1 March 2026 and names the brands it covers.

Hakusan Onsen

白山温泉

Yes, and the bathhouse says so in writing. Its FAQ answers the tattoo question with a flat yes and a reason: this is a public bathhouse, so anyone may bathe. The only people it turns away are those who cause trouble for other bathers. No seal, no size rule, no surcharge.

入浴できます。白山温泉は、公衆浴場ですのでどなたでもご入浴できます。ただし、他のお客様へご迷惑をかける方についてはご入浴をご遠慮頂きます。

Best for: A 550-yen walk-in soak where the rule is published instead of guessed at

Eight tubs and two saunas on groundwater pumped from about 150 meters down and steeped in mineral ore before heating, so it is not a registered hot spring. The cold tub uses the same groundwater, chilled to about 15 to 16°C. Adults 550 yen, 730 yen with the sauna. 15:00 to 24:00, plus a Sunday morning bath 8:00 to 12:00. Closed Wednesdays. No smoking anywhere inside.

ぽかぽか温泉 新守山乃湯

Admitted at any size, with a band rather than a cover. The bathhouse says that whatever the size of the tattoo, you may bathe once you buy its designated 100-yen tattoo sauna band at the front desk and wear it. Nothing has to be hidden. The only people refused outright are members of organized crime groups.

入れ墨・Tattooの大きさに関わらず、当館指定の入れ墨・Tattoo専用のサウナバンド(100円)を追加で購入の上、巻いて頂ければご入浴頂けます。

Best for: A full back piece that no cover seal would ever fit, admitted for the price of a 100-yen wristband

Open 6:00 to 25:00 daily, last entry 24:30. Bath only 550 yen for adults, 850 yen with the sauna and a sauna towel, 1,000 yen with rented bath and face towels. City rules bar under-18s after 23:00 even with a parent. The house sauna runs above 100°C on auto steam.

Nothing to cover and nothing to declare. The house’s own question-and-answer page is asked whether a tattooed guest may use it and replies that there is no particular restriction on tattoos. The one place the same operator shuts out is Forest House, the women’s sauna floor at its Wellbe Sakae branch, which is a different building.

タトゥーについて、特にご利用制限はございません。

Best for: A tattooed traveler in central Nagoya who wants a bath house that asks nothing, and does not mind that the water is cold

This is a sauna house, not a hot spring. The water tubs are cold plunges; there is no large hot bath and no spring. Men and women use the main rooms together in sauna clothing, and there are single-sex rooms as well. Open 12:00 to 21:00 Wednesday through Monday with last sauna entry at 20:30, closed Tuesdays. Three hours from 2,700 yen on weekdays and 3,300 yen at weekends. Whole-house private hire is sold separately and has to be booked six weeks ahead.

Admitted under the two cover seals the front desk hands out. The bath page refuses tattooed bathers except where two 8-by-10-centimeter cover seals, given out free at the desk, hide the tattoo. This is the smallest seal allowance of any chain in the city, so it suits a single small piece rather than a sleeve. The same sentence turns away anyone who has been drinking.

Best for: One small tattoo, two free seals and a bath a short walk from the station’s north end

The seals are free here, unlike the Route Inn and Daiwa Roynet baths in the same city, which sell them. Vessel publishes no chain-wide policy page; the identical sentence appears on each property’s own bath page. Seal size 8 x 10 cm.

Traveler’s note

The city’s big day-use complexes refuse tattoos on their own pages almost without exception, and several ban cover stickers by name, so arriving already covered does not help. Canal Resort words it that way, and so does Nakagawa Corona-no-yu, which rents rooms with their own hot spring bath under the same building-wide ban. Tenku SPA HILLS Ryusenji-no-yu is the one day-use house that sells seals instead. SaunaLab has no hot bath at all, only cold plunges, and its listing says so.

Common questions

Nagoya questions

Can I use a shared bath in Nagoya with a tattoo?

At three places, with nothing to cover: Mitsui Garden Hotel Nagoya Premier, Hakusan Onsen, and Pokapoka Onsen Shin-Moriyama-no-yu, which asks only that you wear its 100-yen band. Twelve more admit a covered tattoo, at seal sizes from 8 by 10 centimeters up to 11.4 by 20.

Which Nagoya hotels give me the cover seals?

Vessel Hotel Campana hands out two seals of 8 by 10 centimeters free at the desk, and APA gives overnight guests two of 10 by 12 a night. Route Inn and Daiwa Roynet Fushimi sell theirs, Daiwa at 200 yen a seal and two at most.

Can I rent a private bath in Nagoya?

Not at any listing on this page. Nakagawa Corona-no-yu rents rooms with a hot spring bath of their own, but its ban covers the whole building, so the rented tub is no way round the door. Daiwa Roynet Fushimi does let women bathe in a bathing garment, sold at the desk.

Which onsen towns can I reach from Nagoya?

Gero, 1 h 50 away on the Hida, JR’s limited express on the Takayama line, with no change. The same train carries on to Takayama in 2 h 35, where Nohi Bus crosses the pass to Hirayu Onsen in Okuhida in an hour more.
