Ooedo Onsen Monogatari Unazuki Grand Hotel

大江戸温泉物語 宇奈月グランドホテル

The hotel’s own bath page bars tattooed guests from the large baths unless the tattoo is completely covered by the hotel’s designated seals, which it charges for; the group FAQ puts that at two seals of 10cm × 14cm, 220 yen each at the front desk. There is also an indoor private bath for up to five at 1,000 yen an hour, taken on the day only, for anything the seals will not cover.

Best for: A cheap buffet stay beside the gorge railway, with a 1,000-yen private bath

Private bath: indoor, up to 5 people, 15:00–24:00, 1,000 yen per hour, bookable only on the day until 23:00, 30 minutes’ cleaning after each use. Large baths and open-air baths 15:00–24:00 and 2:00–10:00; the group describes the water as diluted, heated and filtered. Tatami floors in the large baths. The association lists 95 Japanese, 12 Japanese-Western and 10 Western rooms. The hotel has a day-use page as well.

Grandvrio Hotel Unazuki Onsen

The hotel’s FAQ says a tattoo may go into the large bath only if a cover seal hides it completely, and that the seals are sold at the front desk. It gives no size or price. The same rule is written for the children’s pool. There is no private bath and no day bathing.

Best for: Families with a small tattoo to cover, drawn by the indoor kids’ pool

The old Unazuki Kokusai Hotel (opened 1987, closed 2020–2021, sold to Route Inn Japan) reopened as this hotel on 28 September 2022 with 81 rooms, a buffet restaurant, a kids’ space and an indoor pool; the ryokan association has commented the Kokusai entry out of its list. FAQ: “当館には貸切風呂はございません” and no day bathing. The FAQ also says bathing garments for surgical scars are allowed across the Route Inn group.

Enraku

延楽

Enraku publishes no tattoo rule and has no private bath for hire; its FAQ says so and points to the rooms instead. Fourteen rooms have an open-air bath of Unazuki spring water facing the gorge, in stone, ceramic or hinoki, and the best of them is on the 14th floor. Book one of those and the shared baths never come up.

Best for: A spring-water tub on your own balcony above the Kurobe River

Room counts from the ryokan association: 5 Japanese-Western rooms and 9 Japanese rooms with an open-air bath, 2 Japanese-Western rooms and 26 Japanese rooms without. The Taihokaku wing, closest to the gorge, got new ceramic and stone spring-water tubs in July 2021, with a screen that opens or closes the bath to the air; the hinoki tubs are in the main building; the Ho-o VIP room on the 14th floor has its own spring-water open-air bath and a tea room next door. Meals in the room or a private dining room. Shared baths: open-air Hana-no-yu (3F, 400-year-old hinoki) and Kotone-no-yu (1F) swap sexes, 12:00–25:00 and 5:00–10:00; indoor baths with sauna. No pets.

Kurobe Unazuki Onsen Togen

Togen publishes no tattoo rule on its pages, and gives you more ways around the question than anywhere else in town. Three small private baths in glazed ceramic, fed straight from the spring, are free to staying guests for 40 minutes at a time. A larger rock-and-granite private open-air bath for up to eight costs 2,200 yen, and three suites have their own open-air bath.

Best for: Private baths at no extra cost, for couples who want several soaks through the evening

Free private baths Akane, Matsuba and Hana-asagi: two semi-open-air and one open-air, facing the Kurobe River, sized for about two adults, 15:00–23:00 and 7:00–10:00, 40 minutes a turn. Private open-air bath Kyokoku: up to 8 people, two carved-granite lie-down tubs, wheelchair access to the tub edge, 2,200 yen for 45 minutes, starting on the half hour 15:30–23:15 and on the hour 6:00–9:45, booked at the desk on the day. Rooms with an open-air bath: Tsukuyomi (top-floor premium suite, 116 m², Shigaraki tub, 2–6 people), Sangetsu (top-floor suite, 90 m², Shigaraki tub, 2–5) and Fugetsu (riverside twin, 75 m²); the page does not say whether the room tubs are spring water. Shared baths: rock and granite halls with riverside open-air sections that swap sexes. The association counts 32 rooms, three with open-air baths, and nine baths in all. A 24-hour foot bath sits outside the private baths.

San Ryutei

サン柳亭

San Ryutei publishes no tattoo rule. It has two detached private open-air baths you book at the desk on the day, and seven rooms with their own open-air bath. The inn’s FAQ is careful to say that only three of those seven, Sakura, Kawane and Tsuki, run on spring water.

Note: Only three of the seven rooms with an open-air tub, Sakura, Kawane and Tsuki, run on hot spring water. The other four are ordinary heated water.

Best for: A room with a spring-water bath, with dinner brought to the room

Detached private open-air baths, open since 2006: Iwa-no-yu Seseragi, rock from the Kurobe River, 3,300 yen for 45 minutes; Hinoki-no-yu Seiryu, 2,200 yen for 45 minutes; each takes 4–5 people; booked at the front desk on the day. A private rock-sauna room is 1,650 yen per person for 50 minutes (2,750 yen alone). Rooms with a spring-water open-air bath, all on the second floor and about 60 m²: Sakura, Kawane, Tsuki (semi-open-air); rooms with an open-air bath of plain heated water (素湯): Yamanami, Ryusui, Mikazuki, Kogetsu (added 2022–2023). The spring-water rooms get a premium kaiseki in the room or a private dining room. Shared baths swap sexes, 15:00–23:00 and 5:30–9:30. The association’s list gives this inn Hotel Kurobe’s phone number by mistake; the number in contact is the one on the inn’s own site.

Entaijiso

延対寺荘

Entaijiso publishes no tattoo rule. It has one private semi-open-air bath, Saikan Sanyu no Yu, at 3,300 yen for an hour, booked at the front desk on the day you arrive. None of its room types lists a bath of its own, so the private bath is the only way around the shared ones.

Best for: One booked hour in a private semi-open-air bath at a 120-year-old gorge-side inn

Private bath 15:00–22:00, 60 minutes, reservations taken at the desk on the day. The large bath Tani-no-yu has an open-air section and swaps sexes; women’s Beni-no-yu and men’s Midori-no-yu are in the basement, 15:00–23:00 and 5:00–10:00, with the inn itself adjusting water temperature by hand. Day bathing 11:00–16:00, 1,000 yen. Closed for maintenance 7–8 September 2026. Part of the Kaiei ryokan group. Jalan calls it 創業122年.
