Tattoo friendly onsen and sento in Sapporo

You do not have to leave Sapporo to get in hot water, but you do have to pick carefully. Two hotels with a large shared bath publish an open rule, five more allow a tattoo a cover seal hides, and the city’s new sauna houses are the most relaxed places in it. Against that, more operators here refuse in writing than in any other city in this guide, including both of its Dormy Inns.

No cover-up needed. The property’s own bath page carries the sentence Mitsui Fudosan Hotel Management put on all 24 of its bath-equipped hotels: the tattoo restriction has been abolished. There is no size limit and no seal to buy. Drunk guests are the only people the page turns away.

Best for: A tattooed traveler who wants the rule in writing within a few minutes of Sapporo Station

Second floor, guests only, free, 15:00 to 09:00 the next morning. The bath reopened on 2026-02-01 after a refit; the hotel describes tiling meant to suggest Sapporo soft stone and a stone garden outside the window standing in for a snowfield. Bring your own towel from the room. No sauna listed. A utility lounge on the same floor has a coffee machine and vending machines.

Tattoos are not restricted here. The bath page states that the hotel has removed its body-art and tattoo restriction, the same wording the operator uses across its bath-equipped properties. Nothing has to be covered and nothing has to be declared at reception.

Best for: Soaking half out of the water on the tub’s built-in step after a day on foot downtown

Second floor, guests only, free, 15:00 to 09:00. The tub is stepped so you can sit in it to the waist rather than the shoulders. The women’s changing room has a powder corner stocked with skincare; towels come from the guest room. Two hundred meters from its sister hotel, and the pair share one rule.

Tattoos are welcome without restriction, and the operator says so twice on its own site, once on the front page and once in its FAQ. Because you rent the room outright there is nobody else in it to mind. Mixed groups are asked to wear swimwear; that is the only clothing rule.

Best for: A tattooed traveler in Susukino at three in the morning with nowhere else to go

This is a sauna suite, not a bathhouse: a 3.2 m² private room with a Harvia stove set around 100°, up to four people, no communal bath and no hot spring. Ninety-minute slots, 5,000 yen for one non-member, 3,600 yen on a monthly membership, with a 10 percent surcharge for check-in between 22:00 and 05:00. Towels, amenities and mineral water are in the price. Open 24 hours, which is rare in Sapporo.

The FAQ answers the question in one line: yes, you may use the place with tattoos. No cover, no seal, no size limit is mentioned. Sauna wear is provided but the operator says wearing it in the sauna room is up to you.

Best for: A tattooed woman who wants a quiet daytime sweat in the middle of the city

Reservation only, and the hours split by sex: women 10:30 to 19:30, men 19:30 to 21:30. A shower room and a changing room rather than a bath — there is no tub and no hot spring. Amenities are laid out so you can come empty-handed. A kashikiri plan books the whole place for a group; the standard course shares it. Same-day cancellation is 1,100 yen. Parking at the Sapporo Grand Hotel is 800 yen for three hours.

Tattooed guests are admitted, on terms the operator spells out. You declare the tattoo before you use the place and register as a member, free, with a photograph of your face, and staff may ask for ID at the door. Tattoos totaling A4 or less across the whole body may be left uncovered; anything larger has to be covered entirely with seals, except on days the operator designates as tattoo days. Turning up uncovered without declaring it can cost you the membership.

Best for: A tattoo you are willing to register with a photograph in exchange for sweating uncovered

A4 measured across the whole body rather than per piece is a threshold this guide has not met before, and so is the photo-registered membership. A separate post dated 2026-02-25 records an every-day, any-size window that ran from 2026-02-16 and was extended to 2026-03-30, with declaration and photo registration still mandatory. That window has expired, so the A4 rule is the standing one. This is a sauna rather than a bathhouse: a Fuji lava-stone room at about 65° and 60 percent humidity, a filtered recirculating cold bath, and a cafe called Water Seven on the same floor. Basement of the Okura building. The site’s facility block lists 11:00 to 06:00 while a news post of 2026-08-01 announces round-the-clock opening, so check before a small-hours visit.

Tattooed guests are refused at the door of the bath unless the tattoo is covered, and the hotel hands out the covers free to anyone who asks. Two sizes are stocked: a large 9.5 × 14 cm and a standard 7.5 × 9.5 cm. That large size is the most generous free seal found anywhere in Sapporo.

Best for: A tattoo about the size of a postcard and a free sticker to put over it

The page does not cap the number of seals, only lists the two sizes. Second-floor bath looking onto a small courtyard garden, with partitioned washing stations. Open 15:00 to 25:00, last entry 24:30, then 05:00 to 10:00, last entry 09:30. Free to guests. You may walk up in room nightwear and slippers, but towels come from the room. There is a women-only post-bath lounge with individual dressers.

Tattoos are refused in principle, but the hotel supplies cover seals at the front desk and you may bathe if the tattoo is completely hidden by them. Ask at reception when you check in. The refusal names stick-on paint tattoos too, so the hotel’s own seals are the only accepted covering.

Best for: A late soak outdoors in Sapporo cold, since the bath stays open past two in the morning

The hotel publishes no seal size and no count, which is unusual and worth settling at the desk before you pay. Bath and open-air bath on the second floor, 15:00 to 26:00 and 04:00 to 09:00, free to guests, bathing tax included in the room rate. Towels come from the room, not the changing area. Lounge IRORI on the same floor is open 24 hours with free drinks around a sunken hearth.

You may bathe if a single 8 × 12 cm cover hides the tattoo. Covers are sold at the spa front desk for 300 yen. Anything a single cover cannot reach, or a full body piece, is refused. The hotel is unusually explicit about why it draws the line where it does rather than at the door.

Best for: One small tattoo and a whole afternoon to spend, out on the line toward the airport

One cover only, so this is the tightest allowance of any Sapporo facility that allows anything. Basement floor, 2,000 m², and not a hot spring: heated water with a reclining bath, jacuzzi, hyper-jet bath, cold bath, Kneipp shower, far-infrared sauna and mist sauna. Day entry 2,600 yen; Thursdays are a Spa Day at 1,300 yen. A separate notice dated 2026-09-09 permits purpose-made bathing wear over surgical and skin-graft scars, which is a different rule and does not extend to tattoos. The spa closed for a refit from 2025-10-29 to 2025-12-26, so confirm it is open before making the trip out.

APA refuses tattooed guests from its large baths and will remove anyone found inside, with one exception: if the tattoo fits under no more than two of the company’s own 10 × 12 cm point cover seals, you may bathe. Overnight guests get two seals free per person per night, handed over one night at a time, so you collect them each time you go down.

Best for: Two small pieces you can cover yourself, on a walkable block west of Odori Park

Two seals is a hard cap, so a sleeve does not pass. The property lists a daiyokujo and an open-air bath among its facilities, 262 rooms, check-in 15:00 and out 10:00. Day-spa visitors buy the seals rather than getting them free. Of APA’s eight own-brand hotels in Sapporo, only this one and APA Hotel & Resort Sapporo were confirmed to have a large bath.

The same company rule applies: refused unless two or fewer of APA’s own 10 × 12 cm point cover seals hide the tattoo completely. Overnight guests are given two free per person per night at the front desk, reissued each night rather than for the whole stay.

Best for: A bath at the edge of the city on the road out to the mountains, with a bus back into town

APA calls the water a radium artificial hot spring rather than a natural source. This is the only Sapporo property the company lists on its own spa index. It sits out in Kawazoe in Minami-ku, roughly thirty minutes by bus from stop 26 at Sapporo Station to Kawazoe 5-jo 2-chome, then two minutes on foot. The two-seal cap still applies.

Private baths only

Tattoos are fine in a private or in-room bath. The communal baths are restricted, or the policy is unconfirmed. What this means

Dansetsu Sapporo

Book one of the upper-floor rooms and the bathing question does not come up: the Premier Twin has an artificial hot-spring bath in its own wet room, and the two sauna room types add a private sauna with a chilled cold bath. The hotel publishes no tattoo rule for its ground-floor shared bath, and silence there is not permission, so treat the room as the answer.

Best for: Bathing and sweating entirely inside your own room, ten floors above Susukino

Three room types have a real wet room with a washing area rather than a unit bath, and the hotel confirms the bath is separated from the toilet in them. Premier Twin, 43 m², 8 rooms on floors 10 to 12, artificial hot spring and overhead shower. Sauna Premier Twin, 39 m², 12 rooms, self-loyly stove and a chiller-fed cold bath. Sauna Suite, 63 m², 2 rooms, sleeps four. Guests in those rooms also get a dedicated lounge with free drinks. The shared first-floor bath is trucked-in alkaline simple spring water designed by Kentaro Imai, open 15:00 to 25:00 and 06:00 to 10:00, but it carries no tattoo wording at all. Sapporo charges bathing tax of 150 yen per person per night here.

Traveler’s note

Sapporo’s real bathing culture is its neighborhood sento, about thirty of them at 500 yen, and this guide cannot tell you about them: almost none has a website, so there is no operator to quote. Two of them turn up on Japanese databases as tattoo-friendly on somebody else’s say-so, which is not a source. If you want a bath tonight and you have ink, the listings below are the ones that have written the rule down.

Common questions

Sapporo questions

Which Sapporo hotels let me use the large bath with tattoos?

Two, both Mitsui Garden, both a few minutes from Sapporo Station, and both publishing the same sentence. Five more hotels and spas allow a tattoo that one cover seal hides, and the free seal at one of them is the largest in the city at 9.5 by 14 centimeters.

Do Sapporo’s saunas allow tattoos?

More readily than its baths. One Susukino sauna judges by total area rather than by seal: up to about a sheet of A4 across your whole body and you bathe uncovered, over that and you cover it, and either way you declare it when you register. Another rents private rooms where the question does not arise.

Is Dormy Inn tattoo friendly in Sapporo?

No. Both Sapporo Dormy Inns ban tattoos on their own bath pages, with no cover-seal exception, which is not what the chain’s general FAQ says. The property’s own page is the one that counts.

What about a proper onsen near the city?

Jozankei is 56 minutes away by coach and has its own guide here, and Noboribetsu is an hour and three quarters by limited express. Both answer the tattoo question very differently from the city.
