Tattoo friendly onsen in Atami

Soratoniwa Atami Izusan

ソラトニワ熱海伊豆山

Two seals’ worth. The group states that a tattoo may bathe if it fits under two of the hotel’s own cover seals, 10×15 cm each and 250 yen at the front desk. That is 300 cm² between them, more than most chains allow, and the only published seal allowance in Atami.

Best for: The one Atami property where a covered tattoo can use the shared bath on stated terms

The seal is the group's own: タトゥーカバーシール 10cm×15cm, 250 yen a sheet at the desk. The rule covers pools as well as baths.

Chikurin-an Mizuno

竹林庵 みずの

There is no shared bath to have a rule about. All fourteen rooms have their own open-air hot spring bath, and the six private baths downstairs are free and unbooked for guests — twenty-one baths in the building and not one of them communal.

Best for: A tattooed guest who wants the question not to arise at all

The ryokan publishes no tattoo policy, and with no large bath it has little to publish one about. Ask when you book if you want that in writing.

Umi no Hana

海のはな

Every room has its own open-air hot spring bath, which is the whole of the answer here: nothing to cover, nothing to declare, and nobody else in the water.

Best for: A quiet night on the coast south of the resort strip

No tattoo policy is published. The shuttle from the station ends on 30 June 2026 by the ryokan's own notice — check how you are getting there before you book.

Yuyado Ichibanchi

熱海温泉 湯宿一番地

The large baths are unstated; the private ones are the way in. The ryokan has reservable open-air baths and rooms with their own, drawn from its two springs — six baths in the house altogether.

Best for: Walking distance from the Shinkansen, with a bath of your own

No tattoo policy is published, and the number and price of the private baths are not either. Ask when you book which of the six you are being given.

Fufu Atami

Every room is a suite with an open-air hot spring bath on it, fed from the ryokan’s own source. There is a shared open-air bathing area with saunas as well, and no published rule about it — the room bath needs none.

Best for: The most comfortable way in Atami to make the question irrelevant

The most expensive listing in this town by some distance. Its FAQ page is no longer maintained and the site routes questions to a chat concierge, so there is no written policy to quote either way.

New Tomiyoshi

熱海温泉 味と湯の宿 ニューとみよし

Eleven baths fed straight from the spring, private ones among them, open around the clock — and rooms with an open-air bath on the balcony. Nothing here has to be shared, and nothing published says it has to be covered.

Best for: A private bath at three in the morning, at a ryokan rather than a resort price

A new wing opened on 17 July 2024 with more baths in it. No tattoo policy is published; ask when you book if you want one in writing.

Marine Spa Atami

マリンスパあたみ

Cover it and come in. The city’s own house rules ask guests with tattoos to hide them with taping or a rash guard — a request for cooperation rather than a refusal, and the only day-use bathing in Atami that admits tattooed visitors at all. It is a swimsuit facility: hot spring water, but pools and slides rather than a naked bath.
