Tattoo friendly onsen in Utoro

Utoro is the one town in eastern Hokkaido where an operator writes a way in. Rembrandt Resort Shiretoko lists who may not bathe and qualifies the tattoo line, barring a tattoo that a cover sticker has not hidden. Cover the work and the seventh-floor baths are open, to day visitors as well as guests. The other three listings are locked doors. Kitakobushi Shiretoko Hotel & Resort closes its large baths to tattoos and sells five room types with a spring bath, three of them on the terrace, and Hotel Kifu Club Shiretoko keeps two reservable open-air baths in a building of their own in the garden.

This is the one operator in Utoro that writes a way in. Its bath page carries a list headed with who may not bathe, and the tattoo line on that list is conditional: it bars people with tattoos who have not covered them with a tattoo sticker. Cover the work and you may use the seventh-floor baths. The hotel does not say what size of sticker it will accept and does not say it supplies them, so bring your own and bring enough. The rule reaches the day visitor too, because the same baths sell to non-guests in the evening.

Rebranded from 知床ノーブルホテル on 1 May 2026. Baths are on the seventh and top floor: a large indoor bath, an open-air bath on the high ground, and a sauna with self-service loyly. Guest hours 5:00–10:00 and 15:00–24:00. Day bathing 15:00–24:00, last reception 23:00, 2,500 yen for adults and 1,200 yen for children aged four through primary school, with 100 yen bathing tax on top for anyone thirteen or over. The spring is given as カルシウム・マグネシウム硫酸塩泉 / ナトリウム泉. The open-air bath closes in strong wind or thunder, and the hotel says it may cap numbers when the bath is busy. No private bath is listed.

The largest house in Utoro refuses the shared floor and then sells you a way around it. Its own FAQ answers the tattoo question with a request to refrain from the large baths, and a second answer says the hotel has neither a family bath nor a rental bath. What it does have is five room types with a hot-spring bath of their own, three of them with an open-air tub on the terrace, and the hotel states in the room descriptions that the water in those tubs is natural hot spring with water and heat added. That terrace, not the bathhouse, is the answer here.

Best for: A tattooed traveler who wants a terrace tub over the drift ice and does not mind paying for the room category that has one

The room types with their own hot-spring bath are オホーツク倶楽部サウナ付スパスイート, オホーツク倶楽部露天風呂付スイート, オホーツク倶楽部露天風呂付DXツイン, 温泉付モダンツイン and 温泉付ユニバーサルルーム. The hotel says of the terrace tubs 露天風呂は天然温泉（加水・加温あり）, so the water is spring water but diluted and reheated. Every room has a shower booth and a washlet; whether there is a tub depends on the room type. There is no family bath and no rental bath, so the only private water here is the room you book.

This hotel refuses harder than anyone else in the town: its bath page says bathing by people with tattoos is firmly refused, and its family bath, which would have been the obvious workaround, is currently closed. One room type answers anyway. The corner deluxe on floors five and six of the east wing is 90 square meters with its own view bath, which the hotel calls a private open-air bath for the room. The hotel does not say whether that tub runs spring water, so ask when you book if it matters.

Best for: A group of up to four who want the biggest room in Utoro and a bath nobody else walks into

The men’s bath Mure is on the first floor and the women’s bath Rosha on the second, with jade laid into the floor and walls; between them the hotel counts a view bath, an open-air bath, a lying bath, a pounding bath, an electric bath, a cold bath, a medicated bath, a jet bath and a sauna. Bathing 15:00–09:30. The family bath is listed in the FAQ as 家族風呂は現在休業中でございます, so do not plan around it. Day bathing 15:00–18:00 at 1,250 yen for adults and 800 yen for children; bath towel 200 yen, face towel 100 yen. The room with the bath is 展望風呂付きコーナーデラックス, 90.75 m², two semi-double beds and two sofa beds, east wing floors 5 and 6. Spring type 炭酸水素塩泉.

No tattoo rule is published, so treat the shared bath as an unknown. The reason to come is a separate little building in the grounds holding two reservable open-air baths, which the hotel books at check-in for about an hour per room. The tubs face the Okhotsk Sea, which means sunset in summer, stars at night and the drift ice in late winter, and nobody else is in them while your hour runs.

Best for: Two people who want an hour of Utoro sunset in a tub of their own, in the smallest and quietest house on the bluff

A family-run all-timber hotel. The two private open-air baths sit in a detached annex and cannot be reserved before arrival: the booking is made at the front desk on the day, one slot of about an hour per room. The spring is given as ナトリウム塩化物ー炭酸水素塩泉, 55.3°C at the source, faintly yellow and odorless. Dinner is a hot-oil fondue the guests cook themselves.

Traveler’s note

Rembrandt names no sticker size and does not say it sells stickers, so carry your own and carry enough. Yuhidai-no-yu, the tourist association’s 500-yen bath on the sunset lookout, opens only from 1 June to 31 October and publishes no tattoo rule, so the cheapest water in town is both unlisted and shut through the drift-ice season. KIKI Shiretoko refuses and has no family bath. Shiretoko Daiichi does not say whether its corner-room view bath is spring water.

Can I use a shared bath in Utoro with a tattoo?

At Rembrandt Resort Shiretoko, if a cover sticker hides it. The condition sits in the list of people who may not bathe, and it reaches the day visitor too, who pays 2,500 yen between 15:00 and a 23:00 last reception. Kitakobushi, Shiretoko Daiichi and KIKI Shiretoko all refuse.

Which Utoro hotels have a bath I do not share?

Hotel Kifu Club Shiretoko books its two garden open-air baths at check-in, about an hour per room, facing the Okhotsk Sea. Kitakobushi has five room types with a hot spring bath, diluted and reheated, and no family bath at all. Shiretoko Daiichi answers with a 90-square-meter corner deluxe whose view bath is the room’s own.

How do I get to Utoro from Shiretoko-Shari?

Shari Bus on the Shiretoko line covers Shari Bus Terminal to Utoro Onsen Bus Terminal in 50 minutes for 1,650 yen, about 55 counting the walk from the station. Shiretoko-Shari is 44 minutes from Abashiri on the Senmo line, or 2 h 24 from Kushiro on the same line.
