Tattoo friendly onsen and sento in Sendai

Sendai is the strictest city in this guide. One hotel asks you to cover nothing, seven places allow a tattoo that a cover seal hides, and against that every one of the city’s four Dormy Inns refuses, along with most of its day spas, several of them naming stickers and tattoos of any size in the same sentence. The listings below are the places that have written down a way in.

The eighteenth-floor bath page states that the hotel has abolished its admission restriction on body art and tattoos, the wording Mitsui Fudosan Hotel Management adopted across its bath-equipped properties. The same block on the page turns away only guests who are drunk. No size limit, no seal, nothing to declare at reception.

Best for: A tattooed traveler who wants the rule in writing and a top-floor open-air tub in the middle of the city

Eighteenth floor, guests only, free, 05:00 to 09:00 and 15:00 to 25:00. There is an open-air section behind a lit wall the hotel describes as dappled sunlight. Not a hot spring: the page names no source and publishes no mineral analysis, so this is heated tap water in a business-hotel tower. Towels come from the guest room, and night wear and slippers are allowed in the corridor.

Bathing is refused as a rule, then reopened by a cover seal. The property’s own bath page states the refusal and then says that some Kyoritsu houses keep concealment seals of 8 by 10 centimeters at the front desk, and that a tattoo small enough to disappear under one may bathe. The page words the seal supply as depending on the facility rather than promising it here, so ask at check-in before you count on it. A sleeve will not pass.

Best for: A small tattoo, a real hot spring on the top floor, and a subway exit at the front door

Fourteenth floor, 15:00 to 10:00, sauna closed 01:00 to 05:00. Sodium chloride water, isotonic and weakly alkaline: a cypress indoor tub, a stone open-air tub screened from view but open to the air, a chilled cold plunge and a two-tier dry sauna with a television and a window onto the bath. A real spring, unlike most hotel baths downtown. The whole building is floored in tatami. Phones and cameras are barred from the bathroom and the changing room. A Booking.com review mentions being given patches at the desk; that is a guest’s account, not the operator’s, so it is not the basis of this listing. The hotel posts a warning about scam messages sent through a messaging app to guests who booked on Booking.com.

Tattoos are refused, and stickers are named in the refusal, but the house then sells the way back in: a tattoo that fits under two of the shop’s own cover seals may be worn into the building. The rule governs the whole complex, not only the baths, so the same limit applies in the rock-bath lounge and the restaurant. The page does not publish the seal size, so measure your piece and ask at the counter first.

Best for: A small covered tattoo and a whole day of sauna rounds north of the city

Open 06:00 to 02:00, last entry 01:30, no closing day. Bathing is 1,100 yen on weekdays and 1,280 yen at weekends, with a cheaper rate for anyone through the door by 09:00; the rock-bath lounge is extra and cannot be booked on its own. Sixteen baths, six of them carbonated, and the house says the carbonation is dissolved artificially. Only the 岩の湯 and 腰の湯 tubs run on the natural spring. The men’s side has a sub-ten-degree plunge and a 162-centimeter-deep one the operator calls the deepest in eastern Japan. Under-eighteens are turned away after 23:00. Bus from Izumi-Chuo terminal, then five minutes on foot.

Covered is admitted. The property’s own bath FAQ answers the tattoo question directly: bathing is allowed when the tattoo can be hidden under a seal the hotel supplies. The chain sets that seal at 10 by 12 centimeters and allows two of them, and says outright that a tattoo too wide to cover is refused, so this works for a small piece and not for a sleeve.

Best for: A short walk from the station, an open-air tub, and a bath you can use on a day ticket without a room

Second floor, with an open-air section. Guests bathe 15:00 to 25:00 and 06:00 to 10:00; day visitors who are not staying can use it 15:00 to 01:00 and 06:00 to 10:00, which is unusual for a downtown business hotel. Not a hot spring: the FAQ describes the water as 準天然光明石温泉, an artificial mineral bath made with a ministry-approved rock as the source. The hotel reopened after a full renovation in August 2025 and was formerly APA Villa. It is the only APA in Sendai with a large bath: the FAQ at APA Sendai Kotodai-koen answers 当館にはございません, and APA TKP Sendai-eki Kita lists no bath questions at all.

Cover it completely and you can bathe. The group FAQ refuses tattoos and then names the exception: the large bath is open to anyone whose tattoo is entirely hidden under cover seals. The word the FAQ uses is completely, so partial coverage is not enough, and the rule is written at group level with no carve-out for this address.

Best for: A covered tattoo, a car, and a bath that is open until two in the morning on the east side of the city

Bath called Tabibito no Yu, 15:00 to 02:00 and 05:00 to 10:00, men and women separate. Not a hot spring: the water is an artificial radium bath made with a ministry-approved product the chain names as Radihope. The men’s side has a sauna for about five people with a standing shower beside it and no cold plunge. The guest-room television shows how busy the bath is. Route Inn also states that bathing wear for surgery scars is allowed at every property, which is a scar provision and not a tattoo one.

The group rule applies here: refused unless cover seals hide the tattoo entirely, in which case the large bath is open. There is no property-level notice softening or tightening it. Bring seals that will hold in hot water for the length of a soak.

Best for: Late arrivals driving in from the south who want a soak before the bath closes at two

Bath 15:00 to 02:00 and 05:00 to 10:00. Artificial radium water again, not a hot spring, and this property has a relaxation room next to the changing area instead of a sauna. Free parking, which is the reason most people pick it over a station hotel. The Nagamachi shopping district and the subway are a short drive away rather than a walk.

Seals, completely covering, and you are in. The refusal and the exception both sit in the group FAQ, and this property publishes nothing that changes them. Staff apply the same standard at the changing-room door as anywhere else in the chain.

Best for: A bed within walking distance of the Izumi sauna strip without paying downtown rates

Bath 15:00 to 02:00 and 05:00 to 10:00, artificial radium water rather than a spring. Spa Metsa Sendai is on the same Osawa 2-chome block, so a covered tattoo can use the hotel bath at night and the day complex in the morning. Expressway access at the door; the nearest subway is Izumi-Chuo, a bus ride away.

Best for: A covered tattoo and a bed near Sendai port

The name says Sendai but the address is Tagajo, one city over and about twenty minutes by car from Sendai Station. Bath 15:00 to 02:00 and 05:00 to 10:00, artificial radium water. Tagajo Station on the Senseki line is the nearest rail. The site of the eighth-century Tagajo fort is a short drive inland.

Traveler’s note

Two things about Sendai’s baths are worth knowing before you choose one. Many are not hot springs: the Route Inns use an artificial radium bath, several hotels add a mineral stone to heated tap water, and one spa puts artificial hot spring in its own name. Each listing says which it is. And there are no private baths in the city at all; if you want water to yourself, Akiu is 43 minutes away on one bus, with its own page in this guide.

JR East Pass, Tohoku area For the days you leave the city. Naruko, Zao, Nyuto, Hanamaki and Higashiyama are all reached on JR East trains, and the Komachi across to Akita alone costs more than most of the pass. Nothing inside Sendai needs it, and Akiu is a city bus that no pass covers.

Which Sendai hotels let me use the bath with a tattoo?

Mitsui Garden Hotel Sendai is the only one that asks you to cover nothing, and says the restriction has been dropped. Seven more allow a tattoo that a cover seal hides, including four Route Inns around the city’s edge and one APA that also sells day tickets to people who are not staying.

Is Dormy Inn tattoo friendly in Sendai?

No. All four Sendai Dormy Inns refuse on their own bath pages, which matches what the chain does in Sapporo. One of them only has a men’s bath and sends women to sister hotels that refuse as well.

Are Sendai’s baths real hot springs?

Often not. Several are heated tap water with an added mineral stone or an artificial radium bath, and the listing says so where the operator does. Most of the real springs downtown are at hotels that refuse tattoos.

Where can I bathe privately near Sendai?

Not in the city itself, which has no private baths this guide could find. Akiu, 43 minutes away on a single bus, has rooms and rented baths of its own, and a house that opens its shared baths to tattooed guests.
