Thirty-seven places in Japan with tattoos allowed outright: no seal, no sleeve, no size limit, and nothing to declare at the desk. These are the baths where the question does not arise — you check in, you go to the water.

Most of these changed recently rather than never having had a rule, which is why older guidebooks and forum threads still describe the opposite. Each entry below links to the page the policy was read on, and where the operator states it in Japanese, that wording is quoted so you can show it at the desk.
