Hotels with onsen baths that admit tattoos

What a hotel is

Many Japanese hotels have a daiyokujo, a large shared bath for guests, and some run it on real spring water. In the cities it is the easiest onsen-style bath to reach: chains such as Dormy Inn, APA and Route Inn put one in the building, and a room costs far less than a ryokan. In the onsen towns, resort hotels have bigger baths and rooms with their own.

The bath is for staying guests, so booking a room is what gets you in. A few also sell day-use entry.

What to bring

Nothing. Towels are in the room or at the bath, and most hotels provide loungewear to walk there in.

Tattoos at a hotel

Hotel chains tend to set one rule for every property, which makes them predictable. Some allow tattoos outright, and many publish an exact cover-seal size.

All 140, by area

Booking through a “Check availability”, “Book admission” or “Find a hotel nearby” button costs you nothing extra and sends a small commission our way — it’s what keeps this guide free for our tattoo community, and every policy on it checked. Thank you.

Hakone

Hotel Green Plaza Hakone

Ubako Tattoos: In a private bath Confirmed

The large baths are closed to guests with tattoos: the hotel’s hot spring page and its day-use page both say so. Book a room with an open-air or half-open-air bath of its own instead; note that the Asian Twin’s open-air bath is heated water, not the spring.

mysa hakone

Chokoku-no-mori (Sculpture Forest area) Tattoos: In a private bath Confirmed

One group per day, whole property. The villa publishes no tattoo policy, and does not need one: the house and its tent sauna are yours alone for the stay. There is no hot spring on the property.

ドーミーインPREMIUM京都駅前

Kyoto Station, Shimogyo-ku Tattoos: Yes, covered Confirmed

Refused in principle, but the chain provides cover seals at properties that stock them: two per guest, in three sizes: 8.5×10.5 cm (3.3×4.1 in), 10×14 cm (3.9×5.5 in) and 11.8×17.2 cm (4.6×6.8 in). If the seals cover it, you can bathe. Ask at the desk when you check in rather than at the bath door: the chain says stocks are limited, and it words the promise as “depending on the facility”. One caution: this hotel’s own bath page says tattooed guests are refused and does not mention the seals, so confirm with the hotel before counting on one.

Not the large bath, but the hotel answers the question by pointing you somewhere else in the same sentence: four private baths, free and unbooked, and the open-air onsen bath on your own room’s balcony. Nothing to cover, nothing to pay, and no size limit, because none of it is shared.

The large bath is closed to tattooed guests, and the hotel names the way round in the same sentence: book a room with its own open-air bath, or reserve the private open-air bath: 2,000 yen plus tax for fifty minutes, booked in advance. It is one of the few places that tells you the alternative before you have to ask for it.

Two seals’ worth, 8×10 cm each: a tattoo that two of them hide completely may use the top-floor baths, and one they do not cannot. The hotel says to ask the front desk for the seals. If yours is bigger than that, the five private baths on the same floor are the way in: 3,000 yen for fifty minutes on a weekday, 3,500 on a holiday, all of them looking at the Pacific.

Two routes, and the size of your work decides which. The large baths refuse tattooed guests except for a small one-point tattoo under the hotel’s own 10×10 cm (3.9×3.9 in) cover seal, which is the tightest allowance on this page. Shoningahama, on the shore between Beppu Station and Kamegawa Tattoos: In a private bath Confirmed

All fourteen room types here come with their own open-air bath on the sea side, and the hotel states plainly that the room bath runs on undiluted spring water rather than heated tap water. That bath is yours alone, so nothing needs covering and nothing needs asking. The two communal baths, Shiosai-no-yu at sea level and the guests-only Shoyo-no-yu on the eighth floor, are a separate question, and the hotel publishes no tattoo rule for either one. There is no kashikiri-buro, so the room is the private option.

Ekimae Honmachi, a minute from Beppu Station Tattoos: Yes, covered Confirmed

The hotel refuses tattooed bathers in the shared bath unless the tattoo is covered, and it supplies the cover. Its own bath page sets out the rule and the size of the sticker it hands over, 8 by 10 centimeters, so anything larger than a palm will not pass. Seven private baths are taken first come, first served, about 45 minutes at a time, which is the way around it.

One room type answers the question and the rest do not. Yuraku, five barrier-free rooms of 55 square meters on the third floor, has a hot spring bath in the room running free-flowing from the source around the clock. The hotel is unusually blunt that the tubs in its other rooms are not hot spring water, and it closed its family and private baths in March 2024, so there is no reservable alternative. Book Yuraku or you are down to the large baths, for which the hotel publishes no tattoo rule.

All 35 rooms have a half open-air bath cut from a single block of stone, fed free-flowing with Horita’s sulfur water, and the hotel’s facility sheet lists no communal bath of any kind. That makes the tattoo question moot from arrival to checkout. The word the hotel uses is 半露天, a bath open to the air on one side rather than a garden tub. Rooms come as Twin, King and Suite, and every grade has one.
