Hotels with onsen baths that admit tattoos
What a hotel is
Many Japanese hotels have a daiyokujo, a large shared bath for guests, and some run it on real spring water. In the cities it is the easiest onsen-style bath to reach: chains such as Dormy Inn, APA and Route Inn put one in the building, and a room costs far less than a ryokan. In the onsen towns, resort hotels have bigger baths and rooms with their own.
The bath is for staying guests, so booking a room is what gets you in. A few also sell day-use entry.
What to bring
Nothing. Towels are in the room or at the bath, and most hotels provide loungewear to walk there in.
Tattoos at a hotel
Hotel chains tend to set one rule for every property, which makes them predictable. Some allow tattoos outright, and many publish an exact cover-seal size.

The large baths are closed to guests with tattoos: the hotel’s hot spring page and its day-use page both say so. Book a room with an open-air or half-open-air bath of its own instead; note that the Asian Twin’s open-air bath is heated water, not the spring.

All fourteen room types here come with their own open-air bath on the sea side, and the hotel states plainly that the room bath runs on undiluted spring water rather than heated tap water. That bath is yours alone, so nothing needs covering and nothing needs asking. The two communal baths, Shiosai-no-yu at sea level and the guests-only Shoyo-no-yu on the eighth floor, are a separate question, and the hotel publishes no tattoo rule for either one. There is no kashikiri-buro, so the room is the private option.

Yuraku, five barrier-free rooms of 55 square meters on the third floor, has a hot spring bath in the room running free-flowing from the source around the clock. The hotel is unusually blunt that the tubs in its other rooms are not hot spring water, and it closed its family and private baths in March 2024, so there is no reservable alternative. Book Yuraku or you are down to the large baths, for which the hotel publishes no tattoo rule.

The house rule is a refusal with one exception, and the exception is the hotel’s own cover seal. Its day-use page states that tattooed guests may not use the large bath unless the tattoo is completely covered by a seal the hotel sells. Rooms come as Twin, King and Suite, and every grade has one.
